Governor Pritzker finally signed the bill to legalize Illinois recreational weed this summer, but now you might be wondering where you’ll be able to purchase your bud come January 1. These Chicago medical dispensaries will likely apply to sell recreational weed in the new year.
Illinois has 55 medical dispensaries, 11 of which are Chicago-based. Instead of allowing new recreational-only businesses to crop up without any vetting, the legalization bill has a small note allowing medical dispensaries to be the first to sell bud. Medical clinics will have the option to both convert to a dual-use dispensary and open an additional storefront solely for recreational Chicago weed sales.
While we’re sure Chicago weed shops will start to flower in 2020, they aren’t allowed to apply for a retail permit yet. That privilege is held only by the existing 55 medical dispensaries in Illinois, which have until September 1 to apply for permits to sell Illinois recreational weed.
So, without further ado, these are the Chicago weed medical dispensaries—and a few close by—where you’ll likely be able to buy recreational marijuana once legalization goes into effect on January 1, 2020.
