The Cubs Don’t Need Your Predictions

The Cubs entering the World Series is a lot like Halloween…

Everyone gets worked up into a frenzy that only happens once a year. This time of year, ghost stories are told and we get so wrapped up in the spirit of Halloween, that we might be tempted to believe that they’re real, and rightfully so. That’s part of the fun, right?

Maybe you visit a haunted place or bust out a Ouija board during a party for fun, thinking in the back of your mind that maybe, just maybe something weird might happen this time. Until you remember that at the end of the day, all of the scares are manufactured for your entertainment.

It’s 2016 and after over 70 years, the Chicago Cubs have entered the World Series, and after a century might even win it. That’s enough time for stories and legends to be passed down from generation to generation. In one hundred years, we’ve heard of goats, black cats, a once ill-fortuned man in glasses and a green turtleneck who we won’t name, and many other supposed omens.

The latest all-knowing source of the Cubs’ fate is red pandas from our very own Lincoln Park Zoo, who in a very Groundhog Day-ish way, picked a box with the Cubs logo over the one with the Indians. As sickeningly adorable as that was (seriously, they are the cutest things ever), it’s distracting us from what’s really at hand.

Another incredible story as of late is that of Michael Lee from California, who has pretty much become an overnight prophet of Chicago sports. His prediction in his 1993 high school yearbook of the Cubs winning the World Series in 2016 has gone viral.

As great as these stories are to share, Cubs fans don’t need to cling onto wild, random predictions in order for the team to win. Yes, it’s part of the fun, but really it’s just for entertainment. When the Cubs win (and we think most fans realize this), it won’t be from a curse or jinx or hex or prophecy or whatever. It’ll be through their own merit as a team.

We suffered a loss against Cleveland last night, but it’s not over yet. In the meantime, we aren’t telling you not to enjoy the stories, legends, and predictions. They’re there because people love this team. All we’re saying is to remember that when the Cubs win, it’ll be because they earned it.

And if that happens, Michael Lee – your yearbook quote will probably be the most hilariously random and amazing coincidence in sports history, and you’ll deserve to be Chicago royalty. We’ll probably frame it at Wrigley Field. If you visit, please never leave. Just in case.
