Chicago Sports Update: Coby White Can Ball: October 12 – 18

There are only five days left until the start of the Bulls regular season. Yes, you read that right, five. Anticipation for this season is at an all-time high after the way the team played in their final preseason games. One thing is for sure, Coby White can play. Plus, the Bears are coming off their bye this week with a home game against the Saints. We’ll dive into that and more in this week’s Chicago sports update!

Basketball: Rookie Coby White Shines Bright

“With the 7th pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, the Chicago Bulls select Coby White.” The hype for the Bulls rookie has been real ever since NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said those words on draft night. After a strong summer and now a strong preseason, fans should feel good about taking Coby White with the 7th pick. In his final preseason game, White saved his best for last with 29 points in yesterday’s win against the Hawks. Whether he was shooting threes or taking flight for some big dunks, Coby White couldn’t be stopped. The Bulls won their final two preseason games and their 2-3 record will be wiped clean next Wednesday. White isn’t the only one balling on the team, and if he and Zach LaVine can combine for more big nights it will make for a fun Bulls season. The Chicago Bulls first regular season game is set for Wednesday, October 23rd against the Charlotte Hornets.

The Chicago Bears head into week 7 of the NFL season coming off a much-needed bye. Injuries continue to haunt the Bears as they sent Akiem Hicks to the injured reserve earlier this week. Hicks is expected to return after 8 weeks and won’t need surgery on his injured elbow. Fortunately, starting quarterback Mitchell Trubisky is set up to play Sunday. Trubisky hasn’t seen the field since we played the Vikings in week 4. His return will be a breath of fresh air for the offense who will look to get things rolling this week. The Bears have a home game this week in an NFC matchup against the New Orleans Saints. The Saints are without their all-time great QB Drew Brees, but they still have managed a 5-1 record. Chicago’s defense will need to improve after their outing against the Raiders even with a Brees-less Saints offense. Sunday’s game is scheduled to kickoff at 3:25 CT in the Windy City. Bear Down!!

Hockey: Securing The First Win

After a winless three games to start their season, the Blackhawks secured their first victory Monday night. The Blackhawks beat the Houston Oilers 3-1 in their first win. Goalie Corey Crawford stopped 27 shots and would’ve had the shutout if it weren’t for a last-minute power-play goal. It was a strong first win for the team as the Oilers are one of the best teams in the league so far. Patrick Kane and Alexander Nylander found the back of the net before Saad sealed the game with an empty-netter. The Blackhawks will look to build on their success tonight against the Columbus Blue Jackets!

Upcoming schedule: Blackhawks vs Blue Jackets – 10/18; vs Capitals – 10/20

As far as Chicago baseball news goes, the Cubs continue their search for a new manager. This week the team interviewed former Phillies manager, Gabe Kapler, and the Astros bench coach, Joe Espada. With these two new options, the candidate pool is up to six. Reports this morning indicate that the front runner for the position is former catcher David Ross. Despite no coaching experience, Ross has the respect of the entire team and organization and has two years of front office experience. Plus, we’re sure the entire fanbase would welcome David Ross with open arms. We’ll keep you updated when the Cubs make a decision!
