Willis Tower

Willis Tower

Background
The structure was originally commissioned by Sears Roebuck and Company, the largest retailer in the world at that time. The building was originally intended to house the 350,000 employees of the company, who remained in the space until 1988.
Although the skyscraper’s name was changed to Willis Tower when it was sold in 2009, any Chicagoan on the street can tell you that it will always be known as the Sears Tower, at least locally.

Why Should You Visit
Today, the Skydeck Chicago attraction on the 103rd floor remains one of the most visited attractions in the city. One of the main selling points is known as The Ledge, which is an area with glass floors that extends out beyond the rest of the flooring. From here, visitors are able to view 1,353 feet straight down to the ground below them.
It’s not hard to imagine why the beacon easily became the most recognized icon in Chicago after its completion in 1973. Stretching an unbelievable 110 stories, the tallest building in the United States is hard to miss from anywhere in the city.
