Valentine’s Day By the Numbers

Ordering dessert just might leave your wallet feeling deserted.

You can’t put a monetary figure on true love, but for a holiday based on showing your other half how much you care about them, the costs of Valentine’s Day often add up quickly. This year, lovebirds will spend an average of $146.84 for a grand total of nearly $20 billion across America. Here’s a look at the stats:

Valentine's DayLooking at the numbers, we couldn’t help but notice that’s quite a bit of money to break up with for one romantic evening. Wallethub, the group that brought you the rankings behind the Best/Worst Cities for Singles and 162 Best Cities for Families, is back with their Valentine’s Day rendition, and Chicago isn’t exactly getting any extra love.

The Windy City placed 89th out of the 100 Best Cities for Valentine’s Day. It’s an embarrassing mark for a city of our size to be sure, but we were far from the worst in the Midwest. Milwaukee, Toledo, Cleveland, and Detroit all ranked below Chicago. The rankings were based off restaurant costs, florists per capita, and number of attractions – among 12 other factors.
