The Waifs & Ruby Boots at City Winery

The Waifs are on tour, showing off their seventh studio album, Beautiful You, at City Winery.

While the three core members of The Waifs hadn’t seen one another since touring together in 2011, the band came together in a new way than ever before. Instead of writing their songs separately, a tradition that had served them well for nearly 20 years, they decided on collaboration.

And they decided to begin by asking one another to nominate the worst song they’ve ever written.

It’s unconventional to be sure, but that word seems to describe the band perfectly. With the three of them living in places across the country, an emerging theme of Home emerged in their new music.

Beautiful You embodies this attachment to home in many different ways throughout the album. Even though the three of them have different notions of the concept, it all blends together seamlessly.

“It’s still great to look across at each other and know where we are going to go with the music,” says Donna. “That has never changed. And we get along better now than we ever have.”

Touring with The Waifs is special guest Ruby Boots. The Australian Alt Country singer takes a coarser approach than most – prompting you to hop on board or get the hell out of the way.

The up-and-coming artist is a welcome addition, and she complements the headliners perfectly. Style & sass pervade her unpolished banter, as if she understands that life has been known to throw the occasional punch in the mouth before staring you down and walking off into the distance.

Still, it’s tough to ignore a heartwarming element in her music. Ruby Boots delicately smoothes the edges of a rough stone while sharpening the point at the end and jamming it home to prove her point. She’s a far cry from your typical cookie-cutter artist, and she likes it that way.
