Why you should visit
The Daley Center itself has been designated as a Chicago landmark, and with 31 floors, it is the tallest flat-roofed building in the world with fewer than 40 stories. Additionally, the steel structure was made to rust over time, and this actually strengthens its frame. This also gives the Daley Center its distinctive red and brown color that the building is known for.
Located in the heart of the loop, Daley Plaza is home to not only the Richard J. Daley Center, but also numerous festivals and performances. The plaza is easily recognizable by “The Picasso,” an abstract art sculpture that was gifted by the artist to the city in 1967.
Over the summer months, the plaza hosts a weekly Farmers Market, where fresh fruits, vegetables, and sweets can be found for affordable prices. Daley Plaza also hosts a variety of cultural programs year-round, known as Under the Picasso. These performances occur every weekday at noon.
During late-November and December, the plaza is transitioned into the Christkindlmarket, which celebrates traditional German and European culture. The market is also the host of the City Tree, which draws people from all over the area.
