The Cubs get a chance to finish off the Rockies Sunday afternoon at Coors Field, and honestly, this is the kind of series we need to dominate if we’re serious about October. At 78-58, we’re in great shape for the playoffs, but sweeping a struggling Colorado team would be the perfect way to end this road trip. Matthew Boyd takes the ball against Tanner Gordon in what should be a mismatch in our favor.

Why Cubs Fans Should Be Excited
Matthew Boyd gets the ball for us, and he’s been absolutely fantastic this year. At 12-7 with a 2.82 ERA, he’s been everything we could have hoped for when we picked him up. Sure, he gave up five runs to the Giants his last time out, but that’s just one bad game in what’s been a great season.
The Rockies counter with Tanner Gordon, and frankly, this guy has been getting lit up all year. A 6.44 ERA? Opponents hitting .326 against him? At Coors Field? Our hitters should be salivating. He’s won his last three starts somehow, but those numbers don’t lie.
The Betting Line Tells the Story
We’re massive favorites at -250, with Colorado getting +200 as home dogs. Vegas is basically saying we should win this going away. The run line has us laying 1.5 runs, and the total is way up at 11 runs – that’s Coors Field for you.
With a 67% win probability according to most models, this is about as close to a sure thing as you get in baseball. Which, of course, means we’ll probably make it way harder than it needs to be.
The Offensive Opportunity
Nico Hoerner has been our most consistent hitter at .292, and Pete Crow-Armstrong is up to 28 home runs now. In this ballpark, against this pitching, both guys should have great opportunities to do damage.
The Rockies do have Hunter Goodman with 26 homers and 75 RBIs, but Colorado is still near the bottom in runs scored. One guy can’t carry a whole offense, especially when your pitching staff has the worst ERA in baseball.
Cubs Fan Perspective
Look, we’ve been in this position before where we’re supposed to beat bad teams, and sometimes we make it harder than it should be. But this Rockies team is really struggling – they have the worst winning percentage in MLB at 28%.
Boyd has been our most reliable starter, our offense ranks sixth in both runs and home runs, and we’re playing a team that can’t pitch or hit consistently. This is exactly the kind of game good teams take care of.
Injury Situation
We’re still without Jameson Taillon and Justin Steele, which isn’t ideal, but our rotation depth has held up. The Rockies are missing Kris Bryant and some other key guys, so they’re not at full strength either.
The Sunday Afternoon Reality
This is it – chance to complete the sweep and head home feeling great about where we stand. At Coors Field with Boyd on the mound against a team that’s given up, we should take care of business.
One prediction has us winning 6-5, which honestly seems low given Gordon’s numbers. But hey, we’ll take any win that gets us closer to locking up that playoff spot.
Time to finish the job and get back to Wrigley riding high. These are the games that separate contenders from pretenders, and we need to show we’re the real deal.
