With the many genres of dance music, it can get hard to keep track of all of them and their differences. Here’s a little background on house music and its importance to the Chicago community:

House Music History:

Frankie Knuckles, the godfather of house music, and his club, “The Warehouse”, re-invented dance music by giving life to the genre of house music in Chicago in 1977. House music derives from disco, but integrates deep, heavy-baseline beats. Though house music was created in Chicago, it’s true inspiration comes from European music, such as English electric pop.

The actual terminology of “house” music came from the shortening of the club’s name, “The Warehouse”, as record stores chose to label recorded music from the club this way.

House music was originated in the African-American community, with the ultimate goal to uplift oppressed communities of people through dance.

Fun Fact: New York City also had a very similar genre of music during this time called “Garage” music, and both the genre and the name derived from the dance club, “Paradise Garage”.
