Chicago’s own Chance the Rapper brought home three highly deserved Grammy Awards this evening, including Best New Artist, Best Rap Album, and Best Rap Performance.
Chance was up against The Chainsmokers, Kelsea Ballerini, Maren Morris, and Anderson.Paak for Best New Artist. His recent album “Coloring Book” topped fellow Chicago rapper Kanye West’s “The Life of Pablo” for Best Rap Album. Chance’s work was recognized in seven total nominations, with “No Problem” and his Kanye West collab “Ultralight Beam” up for Best Rap Song and Best Rap/Sung Performance.

As an artist who’s notorious for his strict decision to not sign with a label and to release all of his work for free online, he’s the first independent musician to win the Best New Artist award.
Hailing from the South Side of Chicago, 23 year-old Chance has taken off to mainstream pop culture status, after keeping relatively local with his mixtape 10 Day in 2012 and Acid Rap in 2013. Today, he’s known not only for his music, but also for his social activism and his passion for the city of Chicago.
Other award winners for this year’s event included Drake’s “Hotling Bling” for Best Rap Song, Adele’s 25 for Best Pop Vocal Album, and Beyonce’s “Formation” for Best Music Video.
