Ever wonder what Chicago looks like from space?
Spoiler: It looks cool.
Astronaut Scott Kelly has a new hobby, and it involves taking pictures of cities around the world as he takes part in his #YearInSpace mission.
Kelly, on day 189 of his 12-month assignment aboard the International Space Station, captured a breathtaking photo of Chicago’s gleaming cityscape beneath the contrasting green glow of the Northern Lights (known as aurora borealis).

Kelly is also the man behind the Bears vs. Packers game space photo taken earlier this year, and the dynamic astro-tographer has captured numerous other images of space, earth as a whole, and other major cities around the globe. While we’re obviously partial to Chicago, we have to admit that his other images are just as stunning – if not more so.
You can check out Kelly’s Instagram account as he continues to snap photos while orbiting around Earth with Russian Cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko. Since the two men are just about halfway done with their mission researching how the human body reacts to prolonged intervals in space, we’re sure there are plenty more shots to come.
And considering the International Space Station orbits around the Earth every hour and a half, it’s not like the spaceman won’t have many more opportunities.
P.S. Chicago will be losing this signature orange glow soon, but that’s actually a good thing.
