Where to Find the Best Kolaches in Austin, Texas

One of the most beloved food items in Austin comes from Texas’s lesser-known Czech heritage — kolaches. Way back in the late 1880s, many Czech people moved to Texas and began to settle in the surrounding area, bringing with them these delightful pastries. Nowadays, kolaches come in lots of flavors and are a staple food for everything from breakfast to midday snacking. We’ve scoured all over town and found the best kolaches in Austin, so enjoy!

Batch Craft Beer & Kolaches

3220 Manor Rd, Austin, TX 78723

Imagine sitting in a lovely beer garden, coffee or beer in one hand, and a savory or sweet kolache in the other. Think of anything better? We certainly couldn’t. Batch really has it all: a fantastic selection of kolaches (served all day!), amazing craft beers, and, whether you’re working, studying, or just hanging out, it’s the perfect place to be.

Lone Star Kolaches

2210 W Anderson Ln, Austin, TX 78757

Lone Star Kolaches have been around about as long as we can remember, and the sheer variety of kolaches they offer is truly unmatched. They have six locations all over Austin, so you’ll be able to get your kolache fix just about anywhere! If you’re having an event, they also have catering services, which we think is pretty awesome.

Mrs. Johnson’s Bakery

4909 Airport Blvd, Austin, TX 78751

You may think of kolaches and donuts as a morning thing, but that’s not so at Mrs. Johnson’s Bakery. Since 1948, they’ve been serving up the freshest kolaches and donuts seven days a week, starting at 7:30 pm ’til noon the next day. Perfect for those late-night cravings.

Moonlight Bakery

2300 S Lamar Blvd #102, Austin, TX 78704

A family-owned bakery, Moonlight has perfected a wonderful selection of European pastries and breads. The bakery opens at 6:30 am, and it’s a good thing too, because their excellent selection of kolaches (including seasonal offerings) are prone to selling out by 8 am!

Capital City Bakery

2211 E Cesar Chavez St, Austin, TX 78702

Whether you’re vegan, vegetarian, dairy-free, or have any other dietary restrictions, Capital City is your kolache haven. Everything they make is 100% vegan, so you’ll still be able to enjoy a ham and cheese kolache — only magically with neither of those ingredients. As an added bonus, they also make loads of delicious vegan pastries.

Kerlin BBQ

2207 E Cesar Chavez St, Austin, TX 78702

Kerlin has some great BBQ, but surprisingly they’re best known for a delicious kolache that can only be enjoyed on Sunday — ’til they sell out, of course. It’s made with their house brisket and cheddar cheese. A spectacular fusion of classic Texas and Czech foods.
