Favorite Texas mineral water brand Topo Chico announced it would release a hard seltzer to the public on March 29th which means that the new sparkling bevvy have officially hit liquor stores in Austin.
In a July 2020 announcement, Topo Chico teased its new hard seltzer flavors: Exotic Pineapple, Strawberry Guava, Tangy Lemon Lime, and Tropical Mango. Each 16 oz can is 100 calories of gluten-free sweetness with a 4.7% ABV, and you can bet your ass Texas retailers will be among the first to receive stock.
Topo Chico Hard Seltzer will also be sold in Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Oregon, following its Mexico and Brazil launch. Topo Chico is owned by Coca-Cola, and this will be the first time in 37 years that the soda giant has sold an alcoholic beverage.
We are super curious to see what kind of cocktails will be made with this new line of hard seltzers. We’re imagining Topo Chico Lemon Lime gimlets and a Spritz made with Strawberry Guava. Maybe even take a page from this Frozen Aquas Frescas recipe from HEB. All we know is that it’s the only drink we’ll see at Lady Bird Lake and Barton Creek this summer.
After the rise of White Claw in 2019, hard seltzers quickly became all the rage. We saw innovative releases from brands we already knew and loved—Blue Moon, Bud Light, and Smirnoff, to name a few—and those we grew to love—Bon V!V and Truly. Old favorites came back too, like our college pal, Natty Light, and it all became a little repetitive, so much so that 2020 barely saw any new hard seltzers. But just when we thought the tide was pulling back, an Austin favorite rose to the challenge and kept the wave going in 2021.
Topo Chico comes in original sparkling mineral water, twist of grapefruit, twist of lime, and twist of tangerine flavors that you can buy from Texas retailers right now, HEB and Sprouts Farmers Market included.
