Austin Kite Festival Soars Into Zilker Park This Spring

The nostalgic kite festival in Austin has been a tradition ’round these parts for nearly 100 years, gracing the skies above Zilker Park every spring. While the festival expanded across Austin’s bountiful green spaces last year, ABC Kite Fest will flutter back into Zilker Park this year on Saturday, April 1, 2023.

ABC Kite Fest, in partnership with Austin Parks Foundation, is celebrating its 95th anniversary back in Zilker Park. Last year, the kite festival took place across the sprawling park system that winds throughout Austin, to encourage social distancing. Zilker Park has always been the epicenter of the festival, though, so we’re excited to see the sky above the spacious lawn dotted with a colorful array of soaring kites once again.

This is the ultimate way to tap into your inner kid, so make sure you’re prepared for the Austin kite flying festival with a multicolored skysail of your own! You can always buy the cheap ones from vendors near the parks, but there is actually a kite store in Austin. World Wind Kites has a great selection of bats, butterflies, fighter jets, octopi, and more whimsical flyers with long tails that will twirl in the wind. We also found this Reddit thread with a few more suggestions from locals.

ABC Kite Fest will also host other events, like MossFest, a children’s contest back at Zilker Park with Saul Paul, Justin Roberts, Barton Hills Choir, and Mr. Will, and the Kite Contest, a friendly competition between you and your squad with contest categories that include Smallest Kite, Strongest Pulling Kite, Oldest and Youngest Kite Fliers, Most Unusual Kite, and more. Don’t miss H-E-B’s Pet Zone, an off-leash pop-up playground with dog-friendly fun.
