Day of the Dead celebrations are looking a little bit different this year. There won’t be any parades, but there are still some amazing ways to celebrate! The Mexican-American Cultural Center is doing virtual events and the Mexic-Arte Museum is having an exhibit. Plus there are some amazing restaurants to grab authentic food (and drinks). Definitely different, but definitely fun!
El Chilito
1623 E 7th St, Austin, TX 78702
Kick-off the festivities with a kit from El Chilito! The kit includes a choice of 3 different kinds of fresh tamales and queso, but it also includes DIY paper marigold flowers and a candle to help you decorate your at-home altar (which is really half the fun of the festival). They’re doing the most to help you get into the spirit, and those tamales are just sooo tasty!
Mexic-Arte Museum
419 Congress Ave, Austin, TX 78701
During the day, hit up the Mexic-Arte Museum and tour the exhibit. The 37 years running exhibit has been open since September and will be open through late November. This year, the exhibit will feature Day of the Dead artwork from Juan Antonio Sandoval Jr.’s collection. Also included are community Ofrendas (altars) and altars dedicated to prominent Mexican figures throughout history. In short – very cool exhibit.
Mexican American Cultural Center
600 River St, Austin, TX 78701
This year the Mexican American Cultural center has taken things virtual! The festivities will run all day on November 1st and 2nd, and will be completely free to stream for the public. Register for the event and stop by the center to pick up your free sugar skull and paper marigold kit. The event also offers makeup tutorials to create Catrina/Calavera (skull) looks. There will be lots of performances, visual art, and to top it all off – a giant piñata art installation outside the main entrance to the center.
El Alma
1025 Barton Springs Rd, Austin, TX 78704
It wouldn’t be a proper Day of the Dead without some authentic Mexican food, and El Alma has it. Grab yourself some ceviche, one of their delicious cocktails, maybe some specialty empanadas, and relax on their lovely rooftop patio.
Licha’s Cantina
1306 E 6th St, Austin, TX 78702
Licha’s Cantina offers food right from the heart of Mexico City. It’s the perfect place to get into the Day of the Dead spirit. Even more, you’ll feel like you’re in someone’s home and enjoying a home cooked meal.
