Founded in 1868, the Lincoln Park Zoo is one of the oldest in the United States. The zoo covers an area of 35 acres, and houses about 1,100 animals from roughly 200 species. The zoo is also home to a burr oak tree from 1830, which is three years before the City of Chicago was founded.
To see the animals, of course! Lincoln Park Zoo is the home of many monkeys, reptiles, gorillas, polar bears, big cats, and penguins. This FREE zoo also contains restaurants and shops to keep you busy in between exhibits. For those looking to check out the scenery, The Lionel Train Adventure ride winds its way through the forest and canyon scenery throughout the day. During the winter, be sure to check out ZooLights, which turns the zoo into an imaginative after-hours wonderland using over 2 million lights.
