Especially in Austin, Mexican food is one of those cuisines that are just always good — and we’re lucky to have it all! From the authentic stuff to our iconic Tex-Mex, with innumerable late-night stops at taco trucks in between, the Mexican food around Austin is guaranteed to hit the spot. Of course with about a million amazing options, it’s near impossible to find the best, but we’ve tried a load of places and these are our current faves!

Curra’s Grill

614 E Oltorf St, Austin, TX 78704

At Curra’s Grill, you’ll find some of the most heavenly, authentic, interior Mexican dishes you’ve probably never heard of. This particular restaurant is also home to Austin’s original avocado margarita, which may sound odd — but it’s incredible.

La Fruta Feliz

3124 Manor Rd, Austin, TX 78723

With one of the cutest names in town La Fruta Feliz has a fantastic menu of classic Mexican dishes with a hint of Texas. Whether it’s breakfast, lunch, or dinner you’re looking for — this place is perfect right down to their handmade tortillas.

El Naranjo

2717 S Lamar Blvd STE 1085, Austin, TX 78704

El Naranjo began as a food truck after chef Iliana de la Vega and her husband moved to Texas. Today it has its very own brick-and-mortar location with traditional Oaxacan dishes — taking you far beyond the world of tacos and into some truly incredible specialties.

Fonda San Miguel

2330 W N Loop Blvd, Austin, TX 78756

Maybe you have something to celebrate, or perhaps the celebration is just the insanely good food you’ll enjoy at Fonda San Miguel. Also especially famous for its margaritas, this restaurant features traditional Mexican foods in a gorgeous, upscale dining environment. From the food and drinks to the restaurant itself, this place is a work of art.

La Condesa

400 W 2nd St A, Austin, TX 78701

La Condesa offers up delicious interior Mexican dishes with a modern twist. Not only is their food spectacular, but they also work closely with local farmers and ranchers to bring you the freshest ingredients all while supporting the community — and we love that!

El Mesón

2038 S Lamar Blvd, Austin, TX 78704

El Mesón is a cocina Mexicana y tequileria, and it doesn’t take much Spanish to know that means two things: traditional homestyle Mexican cooking and plenty of tequila. The restaurant is family-owned, the head chef is self-taught, having grown up in a family fond of cooking, and everything is made from scratch.

El Taquito

1713 E Riverside Dr, Austin, TX 78741

El Taquito originated back in the ’80s as a taco cart in Matamoros, Mexico, and has brought with it a motherload of traditional street food. There are tacos, queso fundido, enchiladas and so much more — and they’re often open till the early hours of the morning!
