After a year of some of our favorite restaurants and bars temporarily—and sometimes permanently—shutting down, we can find relief in the fact that Austin is serious about reviving the food scene this year. Some absolutely incredible new restaurants and bars opened in Austin in 2021, and we want to make sure you know about them.
Cork & Barrel
4000 E Palm Valley Boulevard, Round Rock, TX 78665 | Opened March 17
After months of anticipation, Cork & Barrel Craft Kitchen + Microbrewery is ready to welcome its eager guests. The Irish gastropub — a dream of Founding Fathers Jay Kudla and Sam Darlington — is a loving tribute to Darlington’s Irish roots and a unique take on the typical pubs found in Central Texas. With a proprietary scratch culinary program, signature mixology, onsite microbrewery, dedicated wine cellar and outdoor beer garden, this new microbrewery and restaurant near Austin is truly where Irish flair meets Texas fare.
Sammie’s Italian
807 W 6th Street, Austin, TX 78703 | Opened April 29
An absolutely adorable and cozy Italian restaurant just opened up yesterday on an idyllic slice of 6th street. Sammie’s is taking reservations now and, right next door, joint pizzeria Favorite’s Pizza will open May 4th.
Teal House Bakery
2304 S Congress Ave, Austin, TX 78704 | Opened March 13
What OG Austinites knew as the teal house that operated as a part-time bakery, then moved to a food truck at 1716 E Slaughter Lane, is now a full-time storefront stretching out the ever-growing SoCo strip. Enjoy delicious, freshly baked goods at this family-owned establishment.
Lutie’s
4100 Red River Street, Austin, TX 78751 | Opened April 7
Lutie’s is an inventive new restaurant in Austin decorated in elements from the Jazz Age. The restaurant inspires with regional, homely faire, delectable desserts, and a selective and impressive wine or cocktail menu.
Simi Estiatorio
601 Congress Avenue, Austin, TX 78701 | Opened April 25
While this restaurant temporarily opened its doors in early 2020, we all know how much of a toll that took on new concepts. Simi Estiatorio officially reopened its doors this week, serving up authentic, romantic, and expensive Greek food for one hell of a date night out.
JJIM Korean Braised BBQ
1100 S Lamar Boulevard, Suite 2140, Austin, TX 78704 | Opened February 1
