I don’t know about you but I find there is nothing better on a rainy day than curling up with a book in an oversized lounge chair and sipping on a cup of tea (fuzzy socks are always a great choice as well). But if you live in a place with a bunch of noisy roommates or just need to get out of your cramped apartment for a change of scenery, there are a ton of indie bookstores in Austin that will give you all the cozy vibes!
Black Pearl Books
7112 Burnet Rd, Austin, TX 78757
Black Pearl Books has a slightly different look than some of the twisty-shelved, tight-spaced bookstores in Austin you may be used to with an open and bright space. Lounge chairs and tables take up residency in the shop to encourage book club meetings and other gatherings.
Monkeywrench Books
110 N Loop Blvd E, Austin, TX 78751
Nothing spells cozy than a shop cat lounging around. Monkeywrench Books is a self-proclaimed radical bookstore with an eclectic collection of books, zines, and articles. Its eclectic book selection carries over into its decor which helps create an environment of openness and spurs discussion.
South Congress Books
Relocating March 2023
3703 Kerbey Ln, Austin, TX 78731
A charming bookstore with options that will please everyone. The bookshelves within the shop create cozy nooks throughout while the art books, music posters and prints add to the coziness and decorative quality. While South Congress Books used to be on SoCo, they’ve just temporarily closed to relocate across the street from the OG Kerbey Lane.
BookPeople
603 N Lamar Blvd, Austin, TX 78703
One of the oldest shops on this list, Bookpeople not only has a large space for the plethora of books they’ve attained in their almost 50 years of existence, but also is home to a cute coffee shop that encourages its customers to curl up with one of their many selections.
Vintage Books and Wine
1101 E 11th St, Austin, TX 78702
When most people picture reading, they picture a mug of coffee or tea to go along with it, but Vintage Books and Wine is changing that. Now you can swap that mug for a wine glass and feel as comfortable as you would be sitting in your own living room.
