Hidden within a largely renovated South Austin neighborhood lies an extraordinary and unlikely tourist attraction:
“The Cathedral of Junk”
Back in 1989, artist Vince Hannemann dedicated his life to creating the ultimate backyard art installation: A 30-foot high structure, entirely built from discarded everyday items ranging from old TV sets to bicycle frames and surfboards.
The Cathedral of Junk is a bizarre (and still unfinished) modern tourist attraction in Austin that makes for a truly unique and wonderful visitor experience.
The towing pile of metal, plastic, and rubber isn’t just thrown together either, and kids in particular soon become enthralled by the seemingly endless maze of ephemera crammed into this weird and wonderful home art installation.
Bring a Camera!
The Cathedral of Junk really is a sight to behold: The entire attraction in Austin is a twisted mass of corridors, domed ceilings, nooks, and crannies. Steampunk inspired cogs and gears sit next to psychedelic colored glass and stacks of old toilets, whilst hi-fi parts and bits of rusted motorcycles balance on top of oil drums and old furniture.

The Cathedral of Junk from Vince Hannemann is actually located in his own back yard. That means you’ll need to phone ahead before visiting this attraction in Austin, Texas. You can call (512) 299-7413 to make an appointment, and make sure you bring a small amount of cash to leave as a donation.
