It’s no secret to anyone that French fries may be some of the greatest foods ever invented. The versatility is unmatched — amazing plain, amazing with toppings, even sweet ones (we’ve all tried dipping them into milkshakes). Austin has quite an array of havens for French fries, from plain and simple to more extravagant, so here are our current favorites.
Hyde Park Bar & Grill
4206 Duval St, Austin, TX 78751
The fries at Hyde Park are nationally recognized as being some of the best French fries in the country, let alone Austin. The trick is in their coating, which is made up of a buttermilk batter, some black pepper, and a few other spices.
Salty Sow
1917 Manor Rd, Austin, TX 78722
Salty Sow’s French fries are probably the most extravagant ones we’ve ever tried. They’re fried three times over in duck fat, making them incredibly rich, served with a cold béarnaise sauce and a delicious 110-minute egg.
Hopfields
3110 Guadalupe St #400, Austin, TX 78705
At Hopfields, they really put the French in French fry. These fries are fried to a crispy perfection, with a sprinkling of herbs and a coating of aioli — classic and so tasty!
Black Star Co-Op
7020 Easy Wind Dr, Austin, TX 78752
Black Star is where you’ll find your more classically British “chips.” These hand-cut French fries are nice and thick, made with lots of garlic, salt, and pepper — you can even add cheddar!
Second Bar + Kitchen
3121 Palm Way #101, Austin, TX 78758
Second has some superb truffle French fries, or pomme frites, as they say. They’re served with a white truffle aioli and a dusting of grana padano parmesan.
Sala and Betty
5201 Airport Blvd, Austin, TX 78751
Sala and Betty not only have amazing fries, but they have the most options for different variations. You can choose between two toppings, or if you really can’t decide — get the fry sampler with both toppings and your choice of three different sauces!
Dan’s Hamburgers
5602 N Lamar Blvd, Austin, TX 78751
Dan’s is an iconic Austin hamburger joint that has been serving up old school-style fries since 1973! We always pick curly fries.
Don Japanese Kitchen
411 W 23rd St, Austin, TX 78705
If you’re looking for loaded fries, look no further than Don’s food truck on the UT campus. They start with crispy waffle-cut fries, then drizzle spicy mayo and teriyaki sauce all over — mouth wateringly good.
Chi’lantro
1201 Barbara Jordan Blvd #1460, Austin, TX 78723
The food at Chi’lantro is inspired by Korean bbq, and that follows all the way through to their spectacular kimchi fries. They come loaded with a protein of your choice, kimchi, cheese, a special sauce, and more!
Plow Burger
1505 Town Creek Dr, Austin, TX 78741
Last, but certainly not least, Plow Burger serves up some loaded French fries in Austin, complete with queso, plant-based bacon bits, ranch, and their signature sauce. All of it’s vegan and so, so good!
