JFK Jr. and Carolyn Bessette: a Marriage reaching its end
“He was heartbroken, and I think that was the case with her, too.” This was the way Sasha Chermayeff, the close friend of John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn, the two of them, remembers their final summer.
The couple’s difficulties, relentless paparazzi, the cancer death of John’s cousin Anthony Radziwill, mounting pressures and continuous media scrutiny, had only become more severe. When John got a paragliding accident on the last Monday and broke his ankle, Chermayeff says they were “so disconnected.”
“That’s what I remember most about that weekend. John was saying, ‘She’s so shut down.’ He meant emotionally. They were shut down from each other. They were at a very important crux.” It has been said that the couple’s marriage was under a great deal of strain as they dealt with the pressures of their public image.

Bigelow, the pharmacy she frequented in New York City’s West Village.
“After 30 years it’s really a dream, ” says one of their close friends, “that the generation of our children not only discovers them but also falls in love with them so deeply.”But John’s nephew Jack Schlossberg against the show’s creator Ryan Murphy who is still making noises about it, recently on CBS Sunday Morning said, “He’s making a ton of money by exposing the life of someone else in such a grotesque way.” And Daryl Hannah, John’s ex-girlfriend, who is 65 years old at the moment, did not hold back when she wrote a freighting opinion piece in the New York Times on March 6 about the “tragedy-exploiting” show.
The Marriage of JFK Jr. and Carolyn Bessette: A Pressure Cooker
Looking back on the lives of John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette has brought up many questions surrounding the health of their relationship.
“It was a perfect storm of a young couple trying to figure it out: how to live their life, dealing with a failing business [John’s political magazine George], and on top of that, a lot of pressure during a very hot summer, ” says a close friend. “It was, in a way, a pressure cooker.”
Another friend comments: “If he hadn’t crashed the plane, it would have been just a few weeks of tension that didn’t really matter, but it got a life of its own because it was the final chapter of their lives.” However, there were some loving moments too, like the May 1, 1999, White House Correspondents’ Dinner where John hosted a table for George, and Carolyn, beautifully dressed in her Yohji Yamamoto, was by his side.
“John was so pleased, ” says Joe Armstrong, a media executive and a friend of his mother, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. “It was as if he had reached the top.” At the end of the dinner, John went to his wife and said, “Carolyn has never met Mummy. Would you like to have lunch or dinner with us and just tell her everything about her that was real? “We were planning to do it later that summer, but there wasn’t enough time.”

JFK Jr. and Carolyn Bessette’s Final Weeks
Those weeks turned out to be a spin of emotions for John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette. While John’s cousin, Anthony Radziwill was fighting with his condition back and forth from the hospital, Carolyn’s visits were frequent. Sometimes she would even surprise him with some delicious food from his favorite downtown restaurant, Il Cantinori.
After John broke his ankle, he confided in Sasha Chermayeff, “I will, because of this, just be with Anthony. I won’t be able to venture out and bike 20 miles. Anthony won’t be able to go anywhere. I’ll just give him the time he needs before he dies.” And Chermayeff commented: “When he said this, his eyes were wet with tears.”
Carolyn, on the other hand, was suffering. “She was absolutely terrified by the whole matter, all that fame and attention, with all these cameras right in her face, ” states Chermayeff. “Can you even start to comprehend what it must have been like for her to lose her old life, a life that was free for her? And, on top of that she was such a lovely girl. She was very determined.” The last few weeks of the couple’s life were not only full of sorrow, but also the tensions of being public figures.
JFK Jr. and Carolyn Bessette’s Marriage: Plans Amid Struggles
Already by then, John F. Kennedy Jr. had told some friends that he and Carolyn Bessette were no longer physical.
He was ready to have his own family but she was not willing to have children being under the paparazzi all the time. That was the reason why the couple had marriage counselling that summer and even went looking for a second home in Snedens Landing along the Hudson River, where John could keep up his kayaking.
Also, for the first time, John wanted an outside security guard, a huge change for a person who had refused an entourage when he was dropped from the Secret Service protection at 16.
So, he contacted Michael Cherkasky, the man who had been his boss at the Manhattan District Attorney’s office, about guarding his future family.
On the other hand, John was also thinking about a career in politics.
\”Politics is what I know, \” he confided to a good friend, as he started thinking about running for New York governor.

They hadn’t yet learned how to communicate with each other.”
John wanted to be a part of the wedding on July 17 of his cousin Rory Kennedy held at Hyannis Port, Mass., but initially Carolyn was against it. On the strength of John’s biographer and friend Steven M. Gillon who is also the writer of America’s Reluctant Prince, “John confided a friend that ‘If she’s done, I’m done.’ He added that they were in dire need of making changes. Otherwise, their marriage was going to end.”
On July 15, after having his ankle cast removed, John had a conversation with the then CEO of Hachette (which owned George), Jack Kliger. The magazine’s financial support was no longer assured, so he had to round up investors. Pressures from their public lives and heartbreak characterized the couple’s last days.

On July 16, John said goodbye to his flight instructor with the request that he be allowed to pilot the trip to Cape Cod solo. They were at Essex County Airport at 6 p.m. They saw Carolyn there and their plane went up to the sunset at 8:39 p.m., which was the beginning of their last trip.
