Amanda Peet Shares Breast Cancer Diagnosis Through a Touching Essay

Amanda Peet has announced her breast cancer diagnosis.

The Your Friends & Neighbors actress shared her story of breast cancer in one of the most personal essays for The New Yorker. She states that she was diagnosed when both her parents had already been in hospice care.

Peet started by considering her intimate connection with her mom as she mentioned that she “confided everything” to her. “Therefore, it was very odd not to tell her, last fall, that I’ve got cancer, ” she said.

Amanda Peet in her writing for The New Yorker gave a detailed account of how the breast cancer diagnosis revelation started for her.

“Throughout the years, I was informed that my breasts are ‘dense’ and ‘busy’, not as a compliment, but rather as a caution that these types of breasts need more thorough monitoring, ” she noted. Peet went on to say that she had a breast surgeon check her every six months for normal assessments.

She shared that she went for a scan that she considered to be standard on the Friday before the Labor Day holiday. However, the conversation changed starkly. “Dr. K. normally talked to me during the examination, but this time she didn’t say a word, ” Peet continued. Soon after, the doctor told her that she was unhappy with what she saw on the ultrasound and wanted to do a biopsy.

Doing the biopsy, the star of the screen stated that her physician declared that she would personally be the one who goes to Cedars-Sinai and deliver the sample to the pathology. “And I realized, ” Peet penned.

Amanda Peet shared that her doctor gave her a preliminary report the very next day after her biopsy, stating that the tumor “seemed” to be small but she would need an MRI to find out how far the disease had spread.

She was told that the receptor status, which is essential in assessing how aggressive cancer is, will be identified through further tests. “It’s like dogs, ” her doctor told her. “You have poodles at one end and, at the other, pit bulls.”

After the diagnosis, Peet stated that her family and friends were immediately supportive and caring. But she decided to keep her illness a secret from her mother who was suffering from Parkinson’s disease in the last stages of the disease.

“My mom lived in a cottage just twenty feet from our kitchen, but even then, I didn’t think of going to tell her, ” Peet recalled. “She still recognized me from time to time, and sometimes she would say ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to my questions, but most of the time she was giving an empty stare.”

Amanda Peet, after receiving her own cancer diagnosis, was additionally overwhelmed when her sister informed her about the imminent death of their father which was a few days later.

“My sister came to me with the message: our father was dying”. At the same time, she emphasized that while the mother had been in hospice for some time from June, the surprise deterioration of the father’s condition caused them to make the decision to place him in hospice.

Peet mentioned that she was not able to reach him before he died, but she met him afterward. “I did not arrive in time before my father passed his last breath, however, I was able to see his body before it was taken from his apartment, ” she shared.

And in her thoughts about the incident, she continued, “I also felt somewhat guilty for not shedding tears, but the good side of it was that I was given a break from having to figure out how much time I had left to live.”

Even after Amanda Peet’s father passed away, her mind was still preoccupied with her own cancer.

“As soon as I didn’t see my dad’s body anymore, I was able to start panicking about my cancer again, ” she said, in her words revealing that it was very hard for her to grieve and also be afraid of her sickness in a changing hospital environment.

While Amanda and her sis mourned, they were also confronted with a heartbreaking decision whether or not they should break the news to their mom since her health had drastically deteriorated because of Parkinson’s disease. “My sister and I wondered whether we should break the news to our mom that dad passed away, but it was very hard to tell how much she could understand, ” said Peet.

She mentioned that, with her mother getting worse, their talks had gradually become shorter, and she was only able to give “positive, little updates” as her mother was moving toward the end of live.

Amanda Peet disclosed that her doctor subsequently communicated the good news about her diagnosis via text, “All poodle features!”, which means her breast cancer could be treated more effectively.

“In fact, I was even happier than before I got diagnosed, when I was just a normal person without cancer, ” she said. “However, after a while, I remembered my necessity to have an MRI and I returned to my initial feeling of fear.”

Peet shared that the physician informed her that the first thing they would do is to perform a biopsy on the lymph nodes and then look for other abnormalities through scanning. “I got the idea that cancer diagnosis comes inareaslowdrip, ” she said, contemplating the rollercoaster of emotions waiting for the news.

The actress revealed a radiologist discovered a second mass in the same breast and she had to undergo an MRI guided biopsy. She called it like taking tumor sample while inside a “big white imaging doughnut”.

“The doctor told me it was fifty-fifty whether or not there was more cancer, ” she continued.

However, just two days later, Peet got really great news: the second mass was non-cancerous. Therefore, physically, it will only be a lumpectomy and radiation, shall not be double mastectomy or chemotherapy.

After the latest development, Peet and her husband felt it was a right time to reveal their children about her condition.

Amanda Peet Reflects on Mother’s Passing After Cancer Diagnosis

Amanda Peet said that in January, just a couple of weeks after her first fully clear scan, her mother’s hospice nurse was the one who encouraged her to get in touch with the mortuary. The nurse told her that her mother was very close to dying and that it would be simpler to prepare the funeral arrangements beforehand.

Peet talked about being with her mother when she died, “I thought from her eyes she might not have recognized me or that I was just a bunch of interesting, disembodied shapes to her.”

After Peet actually said “howdy doodle”, a usual greeting that the mother was using quite often, she found out that her mother was actually “communing without words”.

Peet wrote about her feelings of sharing the last moments with her mother, “Besides, I had told her everything, I guess, so, time was running out, in any case.”
