Robert Pattinson Shines as ‘The Batman’ Trailer Presents a Must-See Reboot

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, or inside your home lately, you may have missed some of the biggest announcements in the world of comic book films. In an effort to catch up to Marvel/Disney, DC held a showcase for their upcoming films in their Cinematic Universe by releasing a trailer for Wonder Woman 1984 and announcing plans for sequels to Shazam and Aquaman, as well as a concept trailer for the long-awaited Black Adam starring Dwayne Johnson and we haven’t even mentioned the Snyder Cut for Justice League.

However, the biggest and by far best announcement from the DC Fandome was easily the teaser trailer for next year’s The Batman starring Robert Pattinson as the Caped Crusader headlining a star-studded cast. The trailer revealed the direction of the film including Robert Pattinson’s raw emotion as the new Batman as well as the conflict he’ll find himself in as he deals with Catwoman, the Gotham City Police Department, and the emergence of one of the best rogue’s galleries in comic book history. We’re here to discuss some of the biggest takeaways from The Batman trailer and why this is a reboot film you shouldn’t pass on.

Let’s start with what was arguably the biggest question mark heading into the film: Is Robert Pattinson capable of playing the new Batman? In the short two and a half minute trailer, the answer to this question seems to be yes. The premise of The Batman is focused on the crime fighter during the second year of his crusade so the nature of the story necessitated the casting of a younger actor to play the vigilante as well as an actor capable of becoming unhinged at times during that crusade. You may have an image of Batman as being a polished crime fighter while using the exact amount of force necessary to dispatch his enemies but his early years weren’t so refined as he spent many nights beating criminals to a pulp and putting many of his victims in the hospital.

The best moment of the new trailer for ‘The Batman’ comes when Robert Pattinson responds to a thoroughly defeated criminal by saying “I’m vengeance”. We’re also going to be seeing a different Batman than those from Michael Keaton and Christian Bale as we’ll finally get to see a younger, inexperienced crime-fighter begin to deal with how his actions are impacting the city and how he inevitably draws these supervillains to him no matter what he does.

Harry Potter’s Most Memorable Scenes

This is also going to be a different Batman story than what we’ve seen in the past. Director Matt Reeves has cited films like The French Connection and Chinatown as inspirations for the film and it is safe to assume that the new Batman with Robert Pattinson will explore the detective aspect to the famed vigilante. One of the best storylines from the comics is The Long Halloween where Batman is chasing a serial murderer that kills its prey on holidays while leaving behind trinkets and cryptic messages for Batman and the police to solve. Its influence even reached Christopher Nolan as he worked on the scripts for Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, with a two-part animated adaptation recently announced by DC Animation. We could see elements of this beloved storyline make its way to the big screen next year.

As mentioned earlier, the new Batman film has a star-studded cast that includes Zoe Kravitz, Andy Serkis, Jeffrey Wright, John Turturro, Paul Dano, Colin Farrell, and Peter Sarsgaard in addition to Robert Pattinson. There has been speculation that The Batman will be the beginning of a new trilogy of films starring Robert Pattinson and Zoe Kravitz as the two lead stars. Zoe Kravitz looks great as Catwoman in the short amount of time we see her in costume during the trailer and Robert Pattinson’s star is only going to climb after starring in Tenet, which is set to finally premiere in several weeks. It’s also important to note that while Colin Farrell has been cast as Oswald Cobblepot, he has not yet become The Penguin and there is speculation that he could become a villain in a future film. It’s unclear how the dynamic will play out between Robert Pattinson as the new Batman and Riddler but given Batman’s strict no-kill rule, it’s possible that Dano could return in future films as well.

With most of the major blockbuster films pushed to 2021, it could be a fun but crowded year for the movie-going crowd but there are plenty of reasons to be excited for the next adventure for the legendary crime fighter.
