7 Tips For Staying Healthy As You Age

As you age, it is more important than ever for you to stay healthy. However, this can often be easier said than done. Staying healthy can be harder than it was when you were younger. The good news is that you can do things that could help you to stay healthier as you age. Below, you can find some tips that can help you to stay healthy as you age. 

1. Eat a Balanced Diet 

One of the most important things that you can do is to eat a balanced diet. While this may sound obvious, it’s not something that everyone takes seriously or even knows how to do. 

A balanced diet is one that involves eating plenty of fruits and vegetables. In addition to this, whole grains and lean meat along with some low fat dairy products can be enjoyed.  

You should also make sure that you drink plenty of water so that you don’t become dehydrated. When it comes to the issue of alcohol, try to have at least 2 alcohol-free days every week. 

2. Keep An Eye on Your Health  

Try to keep a close eye on your health. You’re now more susceptible to health issues than you may have ever been. Many senior citizens enjoy good health as they age, they just take care of themselves. You may, therefore, need to get the best hearing aids, wear spectacles, and see your doctor regularly.

Have your cholesterol levels and blood pressure checked frequently. If issues do arise, medication can help. However, it never hurts for you to stay as healthy as you can so that you can potentially avoid more health issues. Don’t be afraid to see your doctor whenever you’re concerned about something. 

3. Stay Active 

As you age, you may be tempted to sit down a little more. However, it’s important that you stay active. Try to exercise every day as doing so can help you to stay healthy and strong. Additionally, enough exercise can help you to lower your risk of diabetes, heart disease, obesity, and other conditions. 

Try to do at least 2.5 hours of moderate intensity exercise every week. You should also consider doing strength-building exercises at least twice a week. 

4. Look After Your Feet 

Your feet may not seem like a huge priority to you, but it’s crucial that you look after them. When something goes wrong with your feet, you can find it hard to walk. Standing for more than a few minutes can also be quite challenging. So, wear footwear that supports your feet, and keep your toenails short. You should also consider moisturizing your feet to help prevent dry skin. 

If your feet become very cold or hot, or they start to hurt, contact your doctor. You should also ask for help if you have ingrown toenails, bunions, or corns. 

The more you look after your feet, the more they will look after you. 

5. Get Plenty of Sleep 

A lot of people fail to get as much sleep as they should. As you age, you may find that it’s harder to get to sleep or stay asleep. If you have insomnia, try to avoid taking a nap during the day. Be sure to go to bed at the same time every night. This can help you to establish a routine and your body is more likely to get used to resting at a specific time.

You may also want to make sure that your bed is comfortable and your room is at a good temperature. Don’t forget to make sure it’s not too light as it can be keeping you awake. Finally, your room should not be a place to be noisy. Your room should, ideally, be quiet so that you can drop off to sleep. 

6. Quit Smoking 

We’re all aware that smoking is bad for us. However, it can be hard to quit smoking. Tobacco and cigarettes are linked to many types of cancer, bronchitis, and heart disease. If you stop smoking now, it’s very likely that you will have more energy. In addition to this, your lung capacity will improve as will your circulation. On top of this, you’ll be less susceptible to many types of cancer, bronchitis, and heart disease.

Quitting smoking can be hard. One of the best ways to quit is to cut down on the amount you smoke each day. When you quit this way, you’re more likely to quit for good than if you go cold turkey right away. If you need help to quit smoking, speak to your doctor. 

7. Laugh a Lot

A great way for you to stay healthy as you age is to laugh. Laughter acts as a natural form of stress relief and it can do you the world of good. Try to spend time doing the things that you enjoy. When you deal with stress, you are less likely to drink or eat too much. You can find life much more manageable, and you may even fall ill less often.
