World Cup 2026: Players to Watch

As mentioned earlier, this summer’s tournament will be the final time Messi and Ronaldo feature in the World Cup.

Messi will be eager to help Argentina defend the title having played a key role in their stunning success at Qatar 2022.

He scored seven goals in seven appearances during the tournament, but was pipped to the Golden Boot award by France striker Kylian Mbappe.

His hat-trick in the final took his tally to eight goals, but was not enough to defeat Argentina. The South American side triumphed after a penalty shoot-out.

In addition to football’s top two superstars, Lamine Yamal, Erling Braut Haaland and Harry Kane are amongst the top players worth watching this summer.

World Cup 2026: Teams to Watch

Spain are the bookmakers’ favourites to lift the trophy this summer following their superb title-winning run at the 2024 European Championship.

They boast one of the deepest squads in the tournament and will be a tough nut to crack in their bid to win the World Cup for the second time.

France could be dangerous as they strive to reach their third consecutive final. They lifted the trophy in 2018, but came up short four years ago.

Argentina and Brazil will fancy their chances of reaching the latter stages of the tournament, while Germany and Portugal should be competitive.

England are one of the front-runners in the betting market, but have repeatedly failed at major tournaments and could struggle to progress beyond the quarter-final.
