A Rare Moment of Frustration
Wiz Khalifa might perhaps take the top award for being one of the most relaxed fellows within the hip-hop culture. It’s all about the character’s concept: relaxed, happy, and always high. The standard feels through his lyrics that often have a simple flow and are in the sense of smooth and easy life. While this might be the case, fans were treated recently with a rare sight of their favorite rapper losing it at a concert in Thailand.
Wiz Khalifa entertained a packed house at Club 808 in Thailand, during the after party of Rolling Loud Thailand. Since this was meant to be a party, everyone was looking forward to Wiz Khalifa blending the worlds of hip hop with pop. At this point, everything was running fine—everyone in the audience was singing their lungs out to his songs and the hands were up. What fans in the center did not expect, however, is one fan supposedly pulled out a wad of cash and started tossing dollar bills onto the stage. Wiz Khalifa wasn’t impressed by it, visibly disturbed by it, but made it clear he does not appreciate that kind of ‘support’ from his fans.
TMZ got some exclusive video of what transpired. Khalifa entertained the crowd with his track, Black and Yellow where after he remarked: ‘I wanna show love to everybody in here’ At this point, however, he added, ‘But there is one person I really need to speak to.’ Khalifa then addressed the audience member who had been hurling dollar bills at him. His tone was composed, but definitely assertive: the behavior of the fan was, let’s say, obnoxious.
A Clear Message
To begin with, there was no beating about the bush with Khalifa on this one. “This guy right here,” Khalifa said whilst pointing at the audience member, “stop throwing money on the stage. I’m not a-stripping dawg. What part of ‘don’t throw money on the stage’ do you not understand?” The camera then shifts to the offending audience member, who is shaking his head in unison with Khalifa and appears to comprehend Khalifa’s concerns and defends them. It’s clear that Wiz Khalifa values his art and his performance, and he expects his fans to respect that.
Wiz Khalifa’s comments on the fan’s actions are a classic reminder of the need to uphold the professionalism of an artist and his artwork. Fans, understandably, wish to express gratitude or appreciation, but there is a certain discipline that fans ought to abide by. Money may look good being thrown at the artistes on stage by fans; however, such gestures are quite distracting when an engagement is going on. Wiz Khalifa is talking about what he is worth and as an artist, it is important to have boundaries.
This incident acts as a timely lesson to the supporters of the artist to be civil in their actions during the concert or a live performance. There is nothing wrong in trying to cheer up the audience but certain limits should not be overstepped – the distance and quietude of the performer has to be preserved. In this way, fans are creating and facilitating a better environment for all parties involved.
Expressing His Feelings
“Don’t worry about the money,” Wiz Khalifa offered, explaining that their money was not even a business for them. “And how do we do that? Let’s pick it up,” he said, gesturing to the staff and instructing them to collect the cash swept off the fans and return it. “Throw it back at him,” he said. “Give back all his money. You can toss it at a girl, toss it at your buddies; just don’t toss money at me.” For the sake of making clear the purpose of his discussion, he came back to his point – his request. He was so polite and cool-headed but made it clear he meant it. He appreciated his work and his show, and he demanded appreciation from his fans. This request, according to Wiz Khalifa, was designed to draw the line, and re-affirm his worth as an entertainer.
A Point of Clarification.
Wiz Khalifa had a hunch that some fans may not understand where he is coming from and thus went ahead to explain. “Please, I am asking you,” he said. “This is not a demand. Money is tossed at dancers, and I’m not one of them.” He did not want to be misconstrued. In his words, he is a rapper, not a stripper, and does not hail from that lineage. Wiz Khalifa was in effect making a distinction between his work and other unrelated works. He meant to say that it was not about making money or being the center of attention which his audiences so often try to do, because it was about the performances. Wiz Khalifa in this case was able to clarify his position and in the process inform his fans about his work and reach out for better appreciation.
Wiz Khalifa fans were energized as he spoke to the fan and they showed overwhelming support towards him. It was evident that they complied with his concerns and his reasons as well. The reaction of the fans was sufficient proof of the tough relationship which existed between Wiz Khalifa and the audience. They are fond of his work, they are fond of him, and they are ready to protect him even in times when he is being firm. The roar of those who were in the stadium was enough to make it clear that Wiz Khalifa has an undying fan base. They are not there to witness some artistry, but they are about the drama and the artist behind it all.
