Julie Andrews is making a rare on-camera appearance this week after delivering a video message to open the annual World Parkinson’s Congress in Phoenix in May.

“Now, you see, your participation is invaluable to us in our quest to find a cure for this terrible disease,” said Andrews, 90, during the video, which drew a capacity audience at the opening lecture in the Phoenix Convention Center.

“She ‍ continued, “I fully understand what it is like. “We can all together become the voice for Parkinson’s disease., “She added that I want to be only like a single red ‍ thread.”

Her voice was permanently damaged during the procedure, which was meant to remove vocal cord cysts, she said in a 2004 conversation with the Academy of Achievement.

“I miss the music terribly, but here I am, with a publishing company, lecturing, doing a lot of movies that don’t need singing, actually working more than ever, and I’m having a wonderful time. I think I enjoy it immensely.”
