While Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is set to release in theaters on May 6, 2022, it is merely the tip of the iceberg in terms of what audiences can expect from the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the year 2022. Marvel is back with a vengeance after releasing four films and five series in 2021 and looks to do the same by expanding their wide cast of characters and dive into the threat that a new batch of heroes will face, the Multiverse.
Releasing on Disney+
- Moon Knight
- Starring Oscar Isaac and Ethan Hawke, Moon Knight will showcase Isaac in the titular role as a man who suffers from blackouts as well as memories from past lives as an Egyptian god selects him as its latest hero. While the majority of the plot remains under wraps, the marketing has been impressive as multiple posters and trailers have been released ahead of the premier on Disney+ beginning March 30th.
- Ms. Marvel
- Starring newcomer Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan, the Avengers mega-fan gains new power as she struggles to fit in as a 16-year-old student in New Jersey. The series is set to tie in with the upcoming sequel The Marvels, set to release in 2023. Much like with past series on Disney+, many of the plot details are unknown but will hopefully become clearer when the first episode premiers on June 8th.
- She-Hulk
- While speculation has swirled about this series, the hype is becoming real and there seems to be a lot of faith behind the third Disney+ series set to premier in 2022. With an expected slate of 10 episodes, She-Hulk is longer than other series as both WandaVision and What If…? both clocked in with nine episodes. Mark Ruffalo and Tim Roth have been confirmed to be in the series and rumors have swirled for months that it could be a method of fully introducing Charlie Cox as Daredevil into the MCU beyond his brief cameo in Spider-Man: No Way Home
- Secret Invasion
- The cast list for this series is loaded including Samuel L. Jackson, Emilia Clarke, Olivia Colman, Ben Mendelsohn, Cobie Smulders and Martin Freeman are all confirmed to play a role in the series centered on the Skrull aliens introduced in Captain Marvel. It is expected to release on Disney+ sometime in late 2022.
- Also Releasing on Disney+:
- Untitled Halloween Special: Seriously, there are no details about this one other than Gael Garcia Bernal is set to star and composer/frequent contributor to the MCU, Michael Giacchino is slated to compose the soundtrack.
- The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special: All of the original cast members are set to return in this special directed by James Gunn but the plot details are unknown at this time. It couldn’t be any worse than the Star Wars Holiday Special
Feature Films
- The latest trailer added fuel to the fires of speculation as Patrick Stewart’s voice was possibly heard in the trailer along with new depictions of Strange’s one-time ally, Mordo and Wanda Maximoff who seems to have fully embraced her role as the Scarlet Witch following the events of WandaVision. Rumors have been persistent for months in regards to which variants will be present in the film along with the number of cameos but it remains to be seen exactly what Marvel is hiding ahead of the film’s May 6th release date.
- The first and so far only original member of the Avengers to get a fourth film, Love and Thunder is set to bring back Natalie Portman as Jane Foster and to have her appear as the Mighty Thor version of the character. Writer and director Taika Waititi is back to bring his signature comedic style that worked brilliantly in Thor: Ragnarok and the chemistry between Chris Pratt and Chris Hemsworth in Infinity War and Endgame was a small taste of what to expect as the entire Guardians crew is set to reprise their roles as well when the film drops on July 8th.
- With the unexpected death of actor Chadwick Boseman during 2020, writer/director Ryan Coogler was forced to rewrite the film’s screenplay and focus on the diverse cast of characters introduced in 2018’s Black Panther. While the plot details are unknown at this time, all of the major players are set to return and expand on the culture of Wakanda while honoring the legacy of Boseman. While the film is expected to release on November 11th, there is the possibility that the release could shift to 2023 as the release date has already been shifted twice.
