The first half of 2023 has proved elite for viewers and streaming services top to bottom. From HBO to Hulu, AppleTV+, and in between, the platforms pumping out the best shows to stream are no longer limited to just one or two locations. I know that might be a slight pain to some of our wallets but ultimately if you enjoy immersing yourself in high-quality stories then it’s well worth the price.
With the near future of TV in a gray area due to the Writers Guild strike, who knows what the fall TV schedule will look like. So with that being said, here is a list of the 8 best shows to stream in 2023 that can hold you over for the rest of the year to binge.
Succession | HBO
If you have heard nonstop chatter about this family drama for the last 5 years and have been pushing it off the whole time, which I am guilty of doing. It wrapped up with its 4th season in May, and the final season is being touted as one of the best seasons of television ever. Now I will be honest, I started it as the 4th season was beginning and even though I am halfway through Season 3, it is worth the watch. So if you’ve been under a rock like me since 2018, it is time to start the 40 episode binge.
Silo | AppleTV+
A sleeper in my eyes, this show was released on AppleTV+ in early May and it just wrapped up its 10 episodes on June 30th. A science fiction dystopian show that is so good I binged all 10 episodes in three days. The world that they built is fantastic, the story has depth and complexity while not being confusing at all. There are so many unanswered questions as well that I would appreciate Season 2 tomorrow.
The Bear | Hulu/FX
Season 1 was heartwarming, funny, and intense, Season 2 seems to be following that narrative as well. I am only a couple of episodes into it but it is carrying that full head of steam. For a show that has nonstop intensity at some points, it does the subtle heartfelt scenes so well. Should be at the top of your list for sure if it is not already.
Ted Lasso | AppleTV+
Continuing with more of the best shows to stream that are both heartwarming and funny, Ted Lasso is not only a show that has taken the world by storm but a character that has. From appearing in FIFA 23 to various other forms of media, the character is so loveable. And with Jason Sudeikis practically confirming that Season 3 released this year is the final season, there is no better time to start the binge. It will leave you crying, laughing, and maybe interested more in the game of football (soccer).
Yellowjackets | Showtime
An intense thriller drama that deals with an extremely traumatic experience and the repercussions of it. Season 2 was released earlier this year and Season 3 has already been greenlit. It is definitely a show that will mess with your mind and I feel like it is a must-watch.
The Last of Us | HBO
Based on the incredibly popular video game it does every bit to try and match the incredible story with some twists for television. Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey have a great connection as Joel and Ellie, to me it’s not on the same level as the game but still great. There were plenty of moments that still shocked me even though I was familiar with the source material. Knowing where the second game goes I am very intrigued to see where Season two goes from here.
The Crowded Room | AppleTV+
A bit of a slow burn but Tom Holland is fantastic as always in it. I know that the idea of “getting through the first couple” when talking about a show says a lot. But trust me when I say that once you get through this show it is well worth the wait. The psychological nature of the show is grasping and will keep you coming back to find out how it all pieces together.
Black Mirror | Netflix
While it may be at the tail end of being the breakthrough show it was in the early seasons, it will still have you glued to the screen with whatever wild scenario they cook up. The cast for this season is packed full of big names and the episodes are all enticing for sure.
