Over a month after Todd Meadows lost his life in a fishing accident, his cause of death has finally come out.

The young Deadliest Catch actor who was a deckhand on the Discovery Channel show, passed away because of “drowning with probable hypothermia” and “submersion of body in cold water, ” his death certificate that was issued on March 6 and obtained by TMZ on Monday, April 6 reveals.

The paper shows that the medical examiners carry out a postmortem examination and it was an accident that caused death. On the night of Wednesday, Feb. 25, Meadows “fell overboard” while working on the Aleutian Lady fishing boat near Alaska, a spokesperson for the United States Coast Guard Arctic District told PEOPLE in a statement. He was 25.

The United States Coast Guard Arctic District through its spokesperson revealed a statement regarding the heartbreaking event: “At coast guard command center, at Arctic District in Juneau, the watchstanders were the first ones to be alerted by the fishing vessel Aleutian Lady that a crew member named Todd Meadows had fallen overboard about 170 miles north of Dutch Harbor. The crew found him lifeless after about 10 minutes. The first aid measures and resuscitation attempts were unsuccessful; the crew brought the deceased individual to Dutch Harbor.”

Moreover, the Coast Guard indicated that they were continuing with the investigation of the matter.

Capt. Rick Shelford was the first one to announce Meadows’ death on his Facebook wall on March 2 with an emotional homage. The two were comrades in the production of Deadliest Catch, a show unveiling the perilous life of crab fishermen, and incidentally, their filming for the next season was underway when the unfortunate event happened.

We’ve lost not only a colleague but a brother in Todd Meadows. Although Todd was the latest recruit, in no time he became family.”

He highlighted Meadows’ dedication and charm, noting, “Todd’s passion for fishing and his commitment to work made everyone admire him instantly. He had a lovely smile, and his laughter coming up the wheelhouse stairs or through the deck hailer was a sound we’re going to miss forever.”

Shelford ended by saying, “Everything reflected Todd’s devotion to his children, his family, and his life. He was a hard worker, a deep lover, and a source of happiness for those around him. At the moment, our hearts are shattered in a way that even words fail to express. Please, keep Todd’s children and family in your prayers and thoughts, as they will greatly need your support in the days to come.”

Capt. Rick Shelford finished his touching homage to the Deadliest Catch star on Facebook with these words, “Todd will always be a part of this vessel, this crew, and this brotherhood. Even though we lost him way too early, his spirit will continue through his children and in every memory we hold of him. Rest in peace, brother, until we meet again.”

Discovery Channel representative also agreed with the message and informed PEOPLE, “We are very saddened by the news of the unfortunate death of Todd Meadows. This is really a loss of great magnitude and we pray for his family and friends, his workmates and the whole fishing community who are in shock.”

After Meadows died, his family set up a GoFundMe page to get help for his children and relatives. They stated, “Todd was a dearly loved 25-year-old father, son, brother and friend. He suddenly left us while doing what he loved.” On April 6, the fund which is for his family and friends had collected almost $57, 000.

Todd Meadows was so dedicated to his family that a GoFundMe account started in his name described his dedication, “He was a resolute father of three wonderful little boys who meant the world to him. This heartbreaking loss has left his children without a father, his parents without a son, his siblings without a brother and his family shattered.”

What makes matters worse is that Meadows’ death is yet another blow for the Deadliest Catch cast. These are the same lone fisherman Nick Marvar who died in June 2024 at age 59 after a medical emergency. Other untimely fatalities members include deck boss Nick McGlashan, who succumbed at 33 in 2020, and former captain Blake Painter, who had passed away in 2018 at 38.

The series featured dramatically other people including shipmaster captain Phil Harris, Time Bandit deckhand Justin Tennison and former captain Tony Lara, underlining the high risk and emotional impact of this crab fishing community.
