Celebrities are EVERYwhere in 2026. From the more traditional celebrities like those that appear in blockbuster movies and sing their way to the top of the charts to those involved in headline-making drama, relationships, or exploits, and those who dance, vault, and sprint their way into the news, they spend plenty of time in the public eye. Even amongst a group of names that are world-famous and have a presence in the majority of lives and homes across the globe, there are some celebrities who just seem to have that it factor that makes them so much more watchable, discussable, and generally fascinating than others: these are the ones at the top of the Cultural Index.
What Is the Cultural Index and How Is It Built?
The BetMGM casino blog, The Roar, has done some serious research into the topic and found out who the celebrities are that have dominated the public consciousness in 2026 and will probably keep doing so for the rest of the year (barring any breakup, scandal, or surprising new role or achievement), according to the Cultural Index. The Cultural Index is essentially a set of statistics that point to a result: the result, in this case, being who is at the forefront of pop culture in media and the public eye. There are two pillars that help this index stand: media visibility and public interest. When it comes to media visibility, the index searches for things like podcast mentions, broadcast mentions, and news headlines. When it comes to public interest, it searches for Google searches and Wikipedia (though it is notoriously not the most reliable source) page mentions.
Does Visibility Equal Public Interest?
Excellent question! And the answer is no: these are two different things. Is a cultural presence driven by how much the media shares about them, or is it driven by people’s actual level of interest in the celebrity in question? The answer there is both: those two things combined inform the Cultural Index.
Top of the Pops, So To Speak
1. Taylor Swift
Cultural Index Score: 67.87
Swifties are almost rabid in their support of this pop star, and with her incredibly high level of output in terms of producing chart-topping album after chart-topping album, it’s hardly a surprise that she’s at the top of the list. They say that any publicity is good publicity, and that must be true, because as doggedly as Swifties support Taylor and her career, there’s a large subset of people, especially in online spaces, who are complaining about how sick and tired they are of hearing about a musician that they believe to be overhyped. People are still talking, though, and it shows in the numbers.

2. Michael Jackson
Cultural Index Score: 50.25
This is the ultimate proof that even crossing the barrier between life and death cant dull the fame of certain cultural icons. Michael Jackson, otherwise known as The King of Pop, enjoyed decades of celebrity and success while he was alive and has continued to do so posthumously. As with Taylor Swift, there has been a lot of controversy around Jackson both during his lifetime and after his death, which has no doubt contributed significantly to the continued conversation. Those who still support his body of work recognise him as one of the most talented performers to ever have graced a stage.

3. LeBron James
Cultural Index Score: 48.76
James’s position in this ranking underscores the importance of athletes in celebrity culture and reinforces his place in history as one of the most revered American athletes to ever have played a sport. Beyond being unstoppable on a basketball court, LeBron James has long since become a global cultural figure thanks to his business ventures, charitable acts, and general influence across sports and general media. During 2026, James had around 170,000 podcast references and more than 210,000 mentions across US TV and radio, and the second-highest number of mentions in digital news headlines across the country. He has remained one of the most searched-for celebrities in the country, bringing in more or less 1.6 million Google searches every single month of this year.
4. Bad Bunny
Cultural Index Score: 36.67
This Puerto Rican superstar has had a meteoric rise to fame and cemented himself as one of the USA’s most influential and best-known performers in less than a decade. It was this year that saw his star truly shine through, when Bad Bunny became the first-ever artist to headline a Super Bowl show performed predominantly in Spanish. This, along with his Grammy success, has rightfully made him a very talked-about man. Spanish-language artists are reshaping the musical charts in the US, and Bad Bunny is at the forefront of that movement, earning him around 1.7 million Google searches each month of this year.
5. Sydney Sweeney
Cultural Index Score: 33.93
While Sydney Sweeney’s career opportunities have taken her to new heights of fame, a fair amount of infamy has come along with it. The Euphoria star’s (often debated) acting skills aside, collaborations with brands like American Eagle and poorly (or precisely, depending on your political leanings) chosen slogans, a doubling down on these incidents, and the people that the star chooses to surround herself with have kept her in the public eye for some dubious reasons. It’s these reasons that have pushed her up to the top spot in the “most googled celebrity in the index” list with around 4.6 million Google searches in the USA (about 5% more than Taylor Swift) and 264,000 monthly Wiki views.
