Swing voters: The Key Demographics of the 2024 Election

Politics in the United States (US) isn’t as sharply divided between just two sides as social media might suggest. Many of the country’s population are undecided or leaning towards one side but can be convinced to vote for another. These are the swing voters and the key demographics all sides aim to attract in the 2024 US presidential elections.

What is a swing voter?

To clarify what a swing voter is, the loose definition for the term simply describes them as ‘someone who has yet to decide who to vote for’. They can be identified in polls as people frequently taking neutral answers.

In US politics, a swing voter can also be seen as someone who rejects strict partisan labels. Thus, it can also be interpreted as someone who does know who to vote for but their ballot is an assortment of candidates from different parties.

As of October 2024, the current ratio of swing voters to overall likely voters is 18%. That’s too small to help minority parties win the election but it’s big enough to be a decisive vote count for the Democrats and Republicans. This many swing voters make the US election betting exciting.

It’s important to note that swing voters aren’t uncaring about US politics at all. Most of them just don’t like extreme ideologies and would rather vote based on who they believe has better plans

for the economy. Therefore, the most important debates for swing voters leading up to the election are about addressing taxation, pricing, and immigration.

Swing voters statistics leading up to the 2024 election

Like all groups of people, the population of swing voters aren’t tied to just one demographic. However, knowing who is predominantly part of this group helps political parties understand how to appeal to their majority members. That’s why various surveys keep track of who makes up this key voting bloc:

  • Not all but a huge portion of the swing voters are young. Various surveys show that roughly 43% of the swing voters are under 45 years old, namely the Millennials and Generation Z. The majority are dissatisfied with the current state of housing and taxation in the United States.
  • Swing voters are more racially diverse than overall likely voters. The population is still predominantly white Americans at 62%. However, the statistics of white Americans in the population of likely voters overall is 71%.
  • There’s a higher percentage of women in swing voters than likely voters. Surveys found more female participants with the overall likely voters reaching 53%. However, the figure goes up to 60% when it’s just swing voters.

Note that these are just the findings from surveys. Results can be different on election day on 5th November 2024 because more voters are coming. It’s unclear how many unsurveyed likely voters are swing or committed voters so anything can happen. Even so, a sample size is still helpful in guessing the demands of the people which is helpful in online betting politics.

The current swing voters’ consensus

Swing voters are still largely split on the two majority sides, Democrats and Republicans. Survey shows that they are leaning left on issues like social equity, economic policies, and government spending. However, swing voters show more support towards the right on matters of immigration and foreign affairs and the country’s overall well-being.

It must be said that the swing voters haven’t set their support in stone just yet. They remain open to further debates for the presidential and senatorial candidates to bring forth their plans to address all key concerns. Likewise, all parties can bolster the support they have by doubling down on their proposals or showing that they are best suited to tackle a broader range of issues.

Key concerns that can get the swing voters’ support

Understanding swing voters’ key concerns is crucial for political parties to address what they need to hear. According to surveys, one-third of the swing voters chose economic concerns as

their top priorities. To be more specific, they are looking for stability for jobs with good pay and solutions to help the country navigate inflation more efficiently.

Among the top economic stressors swing voters also wish to address are homeownership and student loan debts. The current housing prices are too high and the concept of having to pay a mortgage discourages younger citizens from moving out of their parents’ house.

Another critical issue among voters is the government’s stance on cryptocurrency. The current term under President Joe Biden saw great progress in pushing the U.S. towards a

crypto-friendly future. U.S.-based investors are already dissatisfied with the country lagging behind other countries in this market so a more rapid development is greatly needed.

Biden has already signed the crypto bill addressing digital assets’ lack of framework. This bill will be made into law sometime in December and what comes after is up to either candidate Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Trump to continue.
