This month, you are turning the big 4-0. You have already had two friends tell you that “40 is the new 30!” and your young adult niece cheerfully advised you that she heard that “40 is actually the new 20!” While you appreciate these sentiments and you are looking forward to a nice celebration with close family, you also know your body is four decades old and it’s probably time to do certain things a bit differently.
One example is skincare. You are happy with the way your skin looks overall and you don’t have many wrinkles, but you also know that you should probably do a few things differently at 40 than you did at 20. For example, the following skin care tips and advice can help you continue to have beautiful skin as you get into your forties:
Get More Sleep
A really good place to start your new anti-aging skincare routine is in your comfy bed. During deep sleep, your body gets to work repairing cells, muscles and organs. When you consider that your skin is your body’s largest organ, sleeping will definitely help you to look younger and more radiant. As you snooze, your skin will work to repair itself, including eliminating toxins while replacing old cells. If you have been able to get by on five or six hours of sleep a night, stop this not-so-great habit now and shoot for more like seven to nine.
Ward Off Wrinkles
While you don’t have deep “elevens” between your eyebrows and your skin is still pretty smooth, you may have noticed a couple of crow’s feet around your eyes. To reduce the visibility of these fine lines and prevent new ones from forming, it’s time to start using some anti-aging products. Look for one that includes vitamins C and F, antioxidants and botanical extracts, such as the Redefine Multi-Function Eye Cream from Rodan + Fields. This anti-wrinkle cream works to strengthen the skin’s barrier around the eyes, thus warding off additional crow’s feet and making the ones you have less visible. Dermal Repair Complex ingredients make it as easy as every to rejuvenate and repair your skin.
Speaking of nourishing vitamins for your skin, vitamin A helps your skin with hydration and getting a youthful glowy-looking complexion. Lack of fatty acids and essential oils leads to dryness and premature fine lines and wrinkles. Additionally, Goat Milk Soap is rich in vitamins and minerals that nourish and moisturize the skin, helping to maintain its natural moisture barrier.
Make Friends with Sunscreen
Up until now, you pretty much only used sunscreen at the beach, when you were at a baseball game or out gardening in the sun for hours. As part of your birthday gifts to yourself, treat yourself to a new bottle of high-quality sunscreen and vow to wear it every day. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, all sunscreens are not created equally; look for one labeled “broad spectrum” as this will protect your skin from UVA and UVB harmful rays. As for the SPF, choose one that is 30 or higher and if you like to swim or like to jog on warm days, go with one that is water-resistant.
Go Light on the Makeup
In order to continue to look youthful, use a light touch when applying makeup. Some women feel that when they’re over 40 they should use plenty of blusher and vivid lipsticks to brighten up their face. Instead, skip the blush altogether or use a very small amount and go with light shades on your lips like pinks and corals. For eyeshadow stick with matte shades that complement your eye color and avoid anything too glittery or garish.
Have a Great Birthday!
Turning 40 is definitely a milestone worth celebrating. In addition to a party with your family, enjoy the day by starting a new skin care routine that involves more sleep, anti-wrinkle products, sunscreen and maybe a trip to the mall to buy some new makeup.
