Shay Mitchell Defends Kids’ Skin Care Brand Amid Backlash
Rini, the kids’ skin care line by Shay Mitchell, is her new children’s skin care line which features a face mask for kids aged 3 and up. The Pretty Little Liars alum’s brand—which includes masks for kids 3 years and older—caused a commotion on the internet, and she responded to the criticism by saying that she was “a little surprised” with the backlash in her interview with Jenna & Friends with Jenna Bush Hager and Olivia Munn on November 19.
“I think if it’s something that involves kids, then there has to be a talk about it,” she explained. “I have so many questions and I am sure that you both have the same, when it’s something that involves our kids, what they eat, what they put on their skin. I thought it would be no different.”
Shay Mitchell Justifies Her Children’s Skin Care Line when Raised Question of Beauty Standards
Shay Mitchell—mom to daughters Atlas, 6, and Rome, 3, with partner Matte Babel—responded to the criticism that a kids’ skin care line, especially for young girls, might lead to the creation of harmful beauty standards.
She claimed that she had empathy for the concern but went on to say that skin care for children is not a new thing. “Skin care is the very first thing we do from birth. We moisturize, we soothe, we comfort their skin as newborns,” she stated. “This is exactly the same thing, only it is in a different format which is more fun and I feel very age-appropriate.”
Shay Mitchell Explains that Kids’ Sheet Masks Are More About “Shared Moments” Than a Beauty Trend
Shay Mitchell declared that her daughters do not perceive sheet masks as ”a beauty thing” for kids, but rather they are something different for them. ”They think about it being a cooling sensation and a shared moment,” she said.
”This is self-care, and taking that moment, that’s how I see it,” she went on. ”When my girls see me doing this, that’s mommy’s time to give back to herself.”
The 38-year-old rini products—after-sun and hydrating jelly masks, plus everyday animal-shaped sheet masks—were, in her words, a “direct” result of her daughters’ “looking” into her skin care routine,” she further added.
Shay Mitchell Says Rini Is A Product Of Her Need For “Something Safe Enough” for Her Daughters’ Skin
“This originated from my experience as a mom of two girls, and myself,” Shay Mitchell elaborated, “and not finding anything that I felt safe enough to put on their skin, when they wanted to share in this moment that I do.”
When she introduced rini in the beginning of November, Shay indicated that the concept became clear after her daughter got a severe sunburn during a trip to Mexico and she made a wish for something that would be easy and safe to apply—thus her aloe vera after-sun mask came into existence.
“Children are naturally inquisitive and instead of dismissing that, we can accept it,” she said in a post dated Nov. 6. “With safe, simple products that parents can trust, and lovely moments that draw us closer.”
