The body positivity movement has been making its way slowly but surely into mainstream media, and there’s an army of plus size influencers leading the charge. The days of seeing the latest trends on one body type is over. Consumers are wanting to see people who look like them wearing the clothes they want to buy. Aspiration is over and authenticity is in.
Issues with Streetwear
Streetwear has faced the same criticism that most fashion styles have faced – that inclusivity has not been made a priority. But thanks to brands who champion authenticity, things are finally moving in the right direction.
Ever since Rhianna launched her businesses, diversity has been one of her main goals. Her makeup line, Fenty Beauty, was one of the first to have an inclusive range of foundations. When she launched Savage x Fenty in 2018, she made sure that diversity in all forms was the backbone of the brand.
Body positivity had been making headway, but the Savage x Fenty shows made it impossible for people to not pay attention. These shows include all different sizes, races and gender identities and the response was overwhelmingly positive.
There were, of course, plus size women but this was one of the first shows to include plus size men as well. Despite coming a long way in terms of accepting women’s bodies, men still have a way to go in terms of body positivity.
Toxic masculinity alongside a lack of representation has gotten in the way of accepting plus size men and their bodies. However, with the rise of plus size male models, it’s time to turn that around.
Plus Size Influencers in Streetwear
- Steven G
One of the men at the forefront of this is Steven G.
The king of understated cool, his streetwear looks are no exception. Favoring a block color ensemble, Steven’s looks are clean and sharp. From color block suits to ice cold streetwear looks, there’s nothing he can’t pull off.
He skyrocketed to stardom after being scouted for Rhianna’s Savage x Fenty show and has had brands falling over themselves to get to him ever since.
- David Fadd
David is one of London’s finest plus size male models and has made it his goal to spread the word. His confidence is all part of his unique streetwear style and is on a mission to help others find theirs.
So not only is David killing it on the modelling scene, but he also wants to make sure he’s doing his bit to help others too.
- Lydia Hudgens
Lydia is used to being behind the lens but was persuaded to share her own street style after a friend convinced her. Her socials are full of her personal streetwear style with her salt and pepper hair as the ultimate accessory.
But you can also find style inspiration from her subjects – all beautifully shot, of course.
- Essie Golden
Essie Golden has been an advocate for body positivity since 2012 and has partnered up with huge names such as Amazon, Nike, and Walmart.
She’s the founder of Golden Confidence, a community of women all on a mission to inspire confidence in others.
Through her bold sense of style, Essie is a figurehead for body positivity and inclusivity.
- Isabel Hendrix
Isabel is an LA based model with a unique streetwear style. When she’s not modelling size inclusive clothes and underwear sets, you can find Isabel selling her vintage finds online.
So, if you’re looking for colorful streetwear inspo that’s also body positive – you’ve come to the right place.
There’s no doubt that inclusive sizing in fashion means more people feel comfortable in their own skin. All our streetwear styled inspirations feel their very best when wearing what makes them feel confident, so why should you be any different?
