Offset released his latest solo album, which hit digital streaming platforms on August 22nd, and the Atlanta rapper had a lot to share with his fans. The 18-track album saw a plethora of guest features from big names like John Legend, Ty Dolla $ign, Jid, Gunna, YoungBoy Never Broke Again, and more.
As anyone in the music industry would do after releasing an album, Offset made an appearance on the “Full Send Podcast” to promote his new project and give his fans a glimpse of what he has been up to.
Considering his recent split with American rapper Cardi B, amid the release of a new album, fans were curious to hear from Offset, who spoke about his marital life, his experience in the music industry, some funny strip club stories, and his relationship with Drake.
The thing that really caught people’s attention is what the former Migos member revealed about the Canadian rapper and how they have worked together in the past.
Relationship with Drake
During his appearance on the “Full Send Podcast,” Offset got asked if Drake had always been supportive, and he didn’t hesitate to say Yeah. “Always showed love,” Offset explained. He went on to describe how Drake would show up for their video shoots and handle everything without any drama, adding, “All that stuff. Don’t make a hassle, don’t be charging folks nothing.”
Back when trap trendsetters Migos were just starting to blow up, Drizzy jumped on their track “Versace” and gave them a huge push, which was key in making the Atlanta hip hop group become mainstream.
Offset pointed out that, unlike some big-name artists who might try to take advantage of artists who are entering the scene, Drake never did that. As Set put it, “We was little folks like… a lot of artists his size would bully the record. Be like, I’m a do it, but I want all the publishing.’ He ain’t do none of that stuff, like, even splits.” Offset also said that even when they (the Migos) were at their peak, Drake didn’t charge them anything.
Offset, whose Real name is Kiari Cephus, revealed that Drake’s generosity went beyond just handing them features, but he also gave them equal shares in royalties.
Besides the clear respect for each other’s talent, this partnership has made good money for both Migos (Offset, Quavo, and the late Takeoff) and Drake. Starting with the “Versace (Remix)” back in 2013, they’ve teamed up on a few tracks, like the 6X platinum “Walk It Talk It” from Culture II and the gold-selling “Having Our Way” from the third and final Migos album, Culture III. Drake and the Atlanta trio even co-headlined the “Aubrey & The Three Migos Tour,” which grossed over $100 million.
Offset’s shoutout really shows how Drake mentored the Migos without asking for a dime in return, but his reach goes further than just music. He’s got partnership deals all over the place, from fashion, sports, and tech to some of the best online casinos in the entertainment world. Champagne Papi, as he likes to call himself, is a big name that almost every brand would love to get an endorsement from.
How much do iconic rappers charge for features?
Getting a feature from a well-known, successful rapper in the hip-hop scene is actually an expensive venture. Top dogs like Future, who is also an Atlanta native, charge a quarter million dollars just to hop on your song.
Megan Thee Stallion, for instance, had to pay the 250k dollars to get a verse from Mr. Hendrix (Future) on her song Pressurelicious. Polo G is another rapper who charges heavy with a price tag of $150k, as revealed in an interview with GQ.
Snoop Dogg also charges a quarter million to give you about 16 bars and another $250k for a music video, where he gives you only an hour to film the video. Snoop Dogg himself has confirmed this, during a 2022 interview in the same Full Send podcast that Offset was recently on.
But if you thought all the rappers charge huge sums of money for features, hold that thought; artists like Eminem do it for zero dollars. Yes, he will give you a verse in exchange for your verse, and if he likes you, he will do it for free. J. Cole also made it clear he doesn’t charge anything for a verse. Instead, he does it free of charge because he is inspired to do it.
Drake’s connection to Atlanta
It’s evident that the Migos benefited quite a lot by working with a superstar like Drake, and that’s why Offset was giving him his flowers. Even though the group ceased to exist in 2023 after the passing of TakeOff, Offset and Quavo are still going strong with their solo projects. Many rappers hailing from Atlanta attribute their success to Drake, with some of their biggest songs featuring the 6 God.
He has collaborated with the likes of Young Thug, Future, Lil Baby, 21 Savage, and more. Unfortunately, the 2024 rap beef changed the nature of things when rappers picked their sides. Because of that, it will be highly unlikely to see Drake collaborating with some of the artists he has worked with in the past, at least not in the near future.
