Kate, Nicole Richie’s Daughter, Unveils New Look and Mom Tribute Tattoo
After announcing her name change, Nicole Richie’s daughter shared a dramatic transformation and her first post on Instagram. Harlow Winter Kate, 18, who was born under the name, recently changed her social media name to Kate.
Nicole went on to say that her oldest child has always been Kate and that the public change “makes sense” because the child is addressing herself as Kate.
She made a debut post as Kate, where she flaunted photo shoots with stunning jet-black hair and a new back tattoo—the wings of an angel, a pair of sketches done in a light hand. The tattoo is likely a heartfelt gesture to the popular wing tattoos that Nicole herself has on her back.
In the pictures, Nicole and Joel Madden’s daughter (him being the lead singer of Good Charlotte) is wearing a sparkling gold fitted dress with small butterflies that beautifully match the newly acquired tattoo.
Nicole Richie Supports Daughter Kate as She Embraces New Identity and Transformation
Nicole Richie, who became famous for The Simple Life with Paris Hilton, directly showed her support for her daughter Kate’s recent transformation and change of name in the comment section on her Instagram post. Kate decorated her pictures with an angel wing emoji and Nicole replied with a series of red heart emojis.
Nicole first talked about her daughter’s new identity in an interview last month, after Kate marked her transformation by turning 18. Kate and her brother Sparrow, 16, are children of Nicole and Joel Madden.
Trying to depict the deep love for her daughter, Nicole posted an Instagram story featuring throwback pictures of Kate, who has recently decided to go by her middle name. The major change didn’t only involve Kate replacing her blonde honey-colored hair with jet black hair.
“Yeah, she goes by her middle name,” Nicole said to People. “She really has her whole life.” When asked about the responses of social media to the name changing, Nicole continued, “I didn’t even check but it’s absolutely normal… she goes by her middle name.”
Nicole Richie and Family Celebrate Daughter Kate’s 18th Birthday Amid Name Change
On Instagram, Nicole Richie celebrated her daughter Kate’s 18th birthday by posting a series of pictures that reflected her daughter’s growth over the years. Among other pictures, the set showed a loving photo of Nicole holding newborn Kate and some very recent pictures.
“18 years of you @katemaddennn,” was the caption Nicole wrote with a red heart and a cake emoji for her 7.2 million followers. Besides, she penned a birthday greeting on her Story saying, “My favorite person in the world is now 18. Happy birthday @katemaddennn. I [heart] you.”
The change of name led to questions from fans, one writing, “Happy Birthday!? Did she change her name?” and another pointing out, “I was thinking that myself, wasn’t it Harlow.”
Even family members came along with the celebration. Joel Madden, Kate’s father and lead singer of Good Charlotte, remarked, “That’s my girl.” Her uncle, Benji Madden, who is married to Cameron Diaz, wrote a heartfelt message: “How to make a grown man cry!!! love you Kate! You’re a bad a**! Never forget it! Happy 18!!”
Nicole Richie Talks About Her Kids and Raising Teenagers “Wild Ride”
Nicole Richie has shared various insights into her journey of raising her two children, Kate and Sparrow, through their adolescent years. “Motherhood is the most wild ride and the absolute best,” she shared with Interview Magazine in 2024.
In a 2024 interview with Glamour, Richie revealed that she and her husband are always honest with their children about the struggles they face, too. Giving this insight into her choice to be an open book for her kids she remarked, “I just so vividly remember being a teenager. It literally feels like yesterday for me. And they know everything I did.” She added that she was aware that she needed to be open about her past with her children before having them, and she’s now quite happy with that decision because it has set her free.
Richie stressed how she wants a truthful relationship with her kids, “I didn’t want my children to find out about me in some big shocking way. And I have always been extremely open and honest with them and I am hopeful that they will be open and honest with me as well.” She shared with Today that parenting teens has been her “favorite stage” so far and she pointed out how she can easily put herself in their shoes.
Nicole Richie Motherhood-career Balance While Embracing Her 40s
Nicole Richie is happy when she can connect with her daughter’s teenage life by reminiscing about her own. “So, like, when my daughter is telling me drama with her friends, I’m like, ‘Yeah, I remember. Laila Heckmath did that to me.’ I even remember first and last names, so it’s definitely fun. It’s crazy. And just the best,” she revealed.
Besides being a mother, Richie hasn’t left the entertainment industry and is still very much part of it. The star recently got together with her old buddy Paris Hilton for the 2024 show Paris & Nicole: The Encore, marking the 20th anniversary of The Simple Life. The same year, she also played the lead role in the remake of the 1991 classic Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead.
Talking to Interview Magazine about her 40s, Richie said this has been her “absolute most fun decade so far.” She went on to say, “I catch myself saying my age now more often than ever, just because I want people to get what kind of headspace I’m coming from. I’m not some 20-year-old fool…”
