As the temperature drops and the snow begins to fall, December can be quite the month in Minneapolis. With holidays abound as the sun setting faster, there’s a great shift in the air in terms of stuff to do around this lush midwest city. And while warm strolls and outdoor activities are maybe a little less frequent, there’s still plenty of fun to be had in Minneapolis, even such trying and uncertain times as these. Here are some things you can do around Minneapolis this December to wash away those end-of-the-year blues.
GLOW Holiday Festival
1265 Snelling Ave N, St Paul, MN 55108
When it goes down early, that just means more time to enjoy the holiday lights and there’s no shortage of that at the GLOW Holiday Festival. Swing on by the Fairgrounds to witness the awe-inspiring sight of a grand holiday display. There’s so much to see with plenty of colorful lights, trees, icicles, and art of the season on display. It’s well worth the drive both to and at the festival.
Christmas in Color
1 Valley Fair Dr, Shakopee, MN 55379
For one of the most animated displays of the season, Christmas in Color is one of the most dazzling drives you’ll have all season. Based around Valley Fair, the socially-distanced event will feature over a million lights all working together alongside synced music for one of the most joyous holiday light showcases in the Twin Cities. Open daily for evening drives but be sure to order tickets in advance.
13000 Zoo Boulevard Apple Valley, MN 55124
The Minnesota Zoo takes on a whole new level of allure when presented as Nature Illuminated. This drive-thru event will take visitors through a wondrous display of holiday lights and towering animal displays. It’s a great way to support the zoo during these tough times and find a little cheer in visual delight this holiday season.
Northeast Farmers Market
629 2nd Street NE, Minneapolis MN 55413
If the season has you starving for something tasty, consider stopping by the Northeast Farmers Market. Numerous vendors will be present for this outdoor event of local food to indulge in. The market goes all winter long so there’s plenty of time throughout the season to take in the marketplace.
Winter Lights Drive-Through
3675 Arboretum Drive, Chaska, MN, 55318
If you thought the University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum looked beautiful in the summertime, just wait until you see the place all decked out for winter at the Winter Lights Drive-Through. Drive around the stunning natural beauty of the arboretum’s three-mile drive while marveling at how gorgeous it appears with holiday lights fit to warm the soul. Though perhaps not as enticing as the Arboretum’s usual affair of offering hot chocolate and chilly strolls across the area, it’s still just as pleasing for any and all willing to take a drive into a winter wonderland.
Just because the pandemic has forced much of Minnesota indoors doesn’t mean you still can’t enjoy the festive event that is the Holidazzle. Thanks to Comcast, the Holidazzle show continues this year with broadcasted episodes throughout December. Each show will feature holiday crafts, DIY projects, shopping highlights, and maybe even some visits by Santa. In fact, there’s a whole portion of the website devoted to meet-and-greets from Santa for the kids who want to speak to the jolly man himself.
