Mel Blatt Reveals Strictly Experience “Stripped Away” Her Self-Confidence
Mel Blatt of the All Saints band has talked about her experience on the show Strictly Come Dancing, confessing that the whole thing made her feel “very vulnerable” and her self-esteem took a hit.
The 50-year-old singer disclosed that the flowing yellow dress she wore for the dance made her feel so awkward that she even joked it gave her the “appearance of custard.” In conversation with Good Housekeeping UK, she shared the emotional effect the show had on her.
“I was very vulnerable,” she admitted. “I’m 50 years old and it took me 50 years to feel as good as I ever have about myself and Strictly took that away. Nothing inappropriate happened — in fact, I think they’re very well-behaved — but I just didn’t feel nice in the dress.”
Mel along with her professional dancing partner, Kai Widdrington, came fifth out of six couples after their American Smooth dance. The winner of the competition was TV presenter Scarlett Moffatt and Vito Coppola who received a perfect score of 40 for their Cha-Cha-Cha.
Mel Blatt Doesn’t See Herself Doing Strictly Again After “Challenging” Experience
Mel Blatt and partner Kai Widdrington scored very well, 36 out of 40, even though Mel was quite uncomfortable with the whole process. During the special, the judges Shirley Ballas and Anton Du Beke went as far as calling the singer “fabulous”.
Mel had been one of the names speculated to be in the running for the full series this autumn, but her recent remarks, which are fairly candid, indicate that she is not going to come back to the dancefloor.
Mel, who performed at the BBC One Christmas special that had a viewership of 7.75 million, revealed to Tess Daly that she “really enjoyed it.” She did, however, give a very honest account of what it was like for her when she said: “It’s been amazing yet challenging, getting out of my comfort zone, having to wear a dress, having to look like custard… all of these things.”
Mel Blatt Considers a Food Career After a Period in Strictly and a Pub
Mel Blatt was not comfortable with her Strictly costume, which may have been the reason for the discomfort she expressed. However, it was clarified that the singer brought her own dress which was then “styled and adjusted” by the show’s costume team to her liking. “Strictly would never make anyone wear something they felt uncomfortable in,” added the source.
Among the achievements of the All Saints group, Mel had five No. 1 singles with them, but she has been looking at other aspects of life besides music recently. She disclosed that she was serving burgers at a pub in North London when asked about her life last year. After leaving the pub, Mel is still very much interested in the food industry and is looking ahead to a career in it.
“A significant thing I want from life is peace and happiness,” Mel, who gained the spotlight together with Shaznay Lewis and sisters Nicole and Natalie Appleton, said. “I want to make a cookery book or have my own cookery show, something like ‘Cheeses of the World’. I’ll make it happen.”
