Kristin Cavallari’s comments about her kids flying coach are boastful and ridiculous. Kristin and Jay, the two together, have three children: Camden, 13, Jaxon, 12, and little Saylor, 10 who are all quite young. Recently, Kristin spoke on the Aspire with Emma Grede podcast about teaching her children a lesson about money.
Kristin Cavallari’s Parenting Rule Sparks Debate
“I’m super aware that they’re growing up in a very fortunate environment, so they fly coach, I fly first class,” she said. “That was important to me when they became old enough that they could. “It’s not as tough when they’re older. I’m like, ‘Bye, guys, have fun back there,’” she says, adding, “I couldn’t do that with my kids. They’ll be okay.” It’s good for them. And I think it’s the little things like that as a parent that make, ultimately, I think, a big difference in the long run.”
Kristin Cavallari who is worth an estimated $30 million believes it is important that her children “don’t get everything they want” and that “if they want something, they have to work for it.” A good example is last summer, both of my boys created their own little business,” she said. “One of my boys was washing people’s windows, and the other one was washing people’s garbage cans. Because if they want something, they must earn it. And they had to make it happen… I want them to know this is my money. This is not your money.”
While Kristin stated that she feels it is “working well for [her] family,” she went on to admit that “there is no one size fits all” when it comes to how one parents their child. Not unexpectedly, Kristin’s comments that she’d “like to make my children fly on an economy plane” have been largely unpopular with many.
Fans Are Divided Over the Parenting Lesson
On Reddit, one person wrote that they “will NEVER understand this stupid ass logic”: “That’s like saying ‘my kids sleep in a tent in the backyard because they didn’t purchase their own house.’ Ma’am, those are YOUR kids. Why do they have to earn their way to anything that you readily experience on the regular? Why do people get rich just to shortchange their own kids?
One of Kristin Cavallari’s commenters joked that Kristin should’ve flown with them in economy to get the lesson on humility, ‘This is how you create a class system within your own family, guys.’ Another added, ‘I bet she could still go on a ton of child-free holidays where she can fly first class all she wants.’ In the comments, people speculated about how her kids would feel, ‘I would be so sad if I were 10 and my mom didn’t want to sit with me on a plane,’ someone wrote. ‘13, 12, and 10 are in theory okay, but I would feel more comfortable having them with their parent supervising.’
“Don’t make someone else have to deal with your 3 teens/preteens.” Many people questioned, “Who is taking care of her kids?” In contrast, others said they couldn’t imagine being separated from their children in an emergency situation: “Even if we had a nanny or trusted relative… I can’t fathom a situation where we have to rely on oxygen masks or use the slide, and my kid isn’t right next to me.”
Some Parents Defended the Approach
For what it’s worth, some people felt that Kristin Cavallari’s approach to parenting – and the strict financial guidelines she’s setting for her children – was actually thoughtful: “I can see what she’s trying to get at, and this is probably a good lesson for unfathomably rich children,” one person wrote. “Especially when you think that she has been rich her whole life, probably a challenging thing to navigate as a mother.”
Many others, however, felt it was a “bit much”: “Isn’t that why parents work? To give our children the lives we didn’t have,” they added. “Of course, don’t give them everything, nor let them become spoiled, but if I can’t give my children the same things I give myself, then I don’t do it.””This did not land how she thought it would,” wrote another commentator.
