The Jurassic franchise has had several ups and downs; from the record setting original film to the critical disappointments of The Lost World, Jurassic Park 3 and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, it has managed to thrill audiences for over 30 years. With the 2015 release of the soft reboot Jurassic World, we were introduced to a newish story with interesting characters that finally feel like the appropriate continuation of Steve Spielberg’s original vision. Fast forward to 2022 and writer/director Colin Trevorrow is back with what is being billed as the end of the Jurassic World series of films and the release of Jurassic World: Dominion set to premiere on June 10, 2022. The film’s first trailer finally offered a glimpse into what we can expect from the trilogy ending blockbuster.
The trailer opens with several of John Hammond’s lines from the original films stating that he wanted to create something that was real and that life will find a way. These lines are played over shots of Chris Pratt’s character herding dinosaurs on horseback along with a brief scene of his pet velociraptor, Blue and what seems to be her offspring, hunting in a snowy forest and a large herbivore arriving at a construction forcing many to stop what they are doing to marvel at the prehistoric creature. It is reinforced during the course of the trailer that following the events of Fallen Kingdom, dinosaurs are creating an imbalance in the world that threatens all of humanity.
We are then quickly reintroduced to the legacy characters of Ellie Sattler, Alan Grant and Ian Malcolm as Ellie seems to enlist Alan for some unknown mission presumably to try and round up the wild dinosaurs and place them in a new park. There is a brief shot of this holding pen that Alan approaches by helicopter that will certainly be a major set piece at some point during the film. The biggest inclusion of this trailer is obviously the dinosaurs or rather the large number of dinosaurs that fill the screen. There are velociraptors, both Blue and what seems to be evil ones that are set to hunt down Owen, several T-Rex’s or similar sized carnivores, the mosasaur that is bringing down a fishing vessel and we also see the return of a dilophosaurus as one appears to roar directly in the face of a screaming Claire. There is also a large number of evolving dinosaurs as feathers are finally added to the look of the raptors which may imply that we may see flying velociraptors which would be nothing short of terrifying.
The rest of the trailer is mainly composed of action snippets as Maisie Lockwood hides from a gigantic set of teeth, Owen & Alan are hunting something in an industrial park, rampaging triceratops flipping over vehicles, pteranodons attacking a plane, Claire hiding in a pond from a hunting predator and Owen and a character named Kayla, portrayed by DeWanda Wise, facing down an unseen predator armed with tasers. As the trailer closes, we hear a slight variation of John Williams’ iconic theme as there is a shot of the main group of characters as Ian Malcolm remarks “Why do they always have to go bigger?” implying that a T-Rex or something bigger is approaching them to kick start a chase sequence. If the trailer was any indication, then we can expect Jurassic World: Dominion will be on par with the action we saw in the original film and in the first Jurassic World.
Jurassic World: Dominion is set to premiere on June 10,2022. It is written and directed by Colin Trevorrow and stars Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Laura Dern, Sam Neill and Jeff Goldblum.
