The actor Johnny Depp was so happy to be greeted by the fans at the Tokyo Comic-Con that he broke down in tears. It was his first trip to Japan in eight years.
As the main act of the event, the 62-year-old actor, met more than 3000 people in two days, and he was at Tokyo’s Makuhari Messe Convention Center till late night on Saturday, Dec. 6 (after midnight) and on Sunday, Dec. 7 (after 10 p.m.). About 97,000 people showed up for the three-days event — the highest attendance ever for Tokyo Comic-Con — and the tickets were sold out within 10 minutes of going on sale.
“Johnny is very touched and overwhelmed by the fans’ reception everywhere he goes,” a source tells PEOPLE. “He actually sees them and realizes those who have been his support and have stood by him these last ​‍​‌‍​‍‌​‍​‌‍​‍‌years.”

“Tokyo is a city that Johnny has always loved and it seems that the love is still very much alive,” the insider continued. “Johnny enjoyed his stay very much and he is already looking forward to his next visit.”
Depp was at the Tokyo Comic-Con to pitch HYDE, a dark graphic novel series that reimagines the classic 1886 novella The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson. The movie, directed by Ridley Scott and produced by HYDE, features Depp as the lead ​‍​‌‍​‍‌​‍​‌‍​‍‌character.

The actor, among other things, went to Tokyo for his art show, “A Bunch of Stuff,” and the Japanese premiere of his movie Modi: Three Days on the Wings of Madness, which he directed. Depp’s trip to Japan was after his visit to Argentina, where he was welcomed by a crowd of fans as the Mayor of Buenos Aires handed him the Key to the City.
