Jimmy Kimmel mocks Trump’s push for a “top secret” ballroom after shooting
Jimmy Kimmel on Monday, April 27, criticized President Donald Trump for his sudden shift towards property development after the White House Correspondents’ Dinner shooting during his monologue. Kimmel criticized the President for turning the Saturday, April 25, security breach into the main reason for wanting to build a new White House ballroom that has stirred a lot of controversy.
Ever since the shooting at the Washington Hilton, Trump has been demanding a new facility and bringing in top administration officials and Republican leaders to support his cause. On Tuesday, April 28, the President even showed a replica of the proposed event space to King Charles and Queen Camilla during their official U.S. visit.
Speaking about this, Jimmy Kimmel says: “Here’s one thing about Donald Trump, he can’t see an opportunity in real estate that he doesn’t take. He even made this a point for his ballroom.” He was specifically making fun of Trump’s Truth Social post where the President called the project “the Militarily Top Secret Ballroom.”
Kimmel Questions Trump’s Claims of “Top Secret” Military Ballroom
In his latest rant, Jimmy Kimmel also got to President Trump’s latest claims, according to which U.S. military is the main driver of the ballroom project and it was planned to be “secret” all along.
“I hate to break it to you, but top secret ballroom is no longer top secret, Mr. President, ” Kimmel joked on his show. Nevertheless, even though he was skeptical of the president’s national security rationale, Kimmel said that the incident at the Washington Hilton shooting actually turned out a strong case for the project, and added with a dry tone, “After this, I might even be pro-ballroom, which is very strange.”
The talk show host ended the bit with a typical sarcasm about the reason for the new addition. “So if something bad happens, at least they’ll be able to dance, ” he said.
Jon Lovett Criticizes Trump’s Ballroom Explanation on Jimmy Kimmel Live!
Jon Lovett, who’s a former Obama speechwriter and co-host of Pod Save America, appeared on Jimmy Kimmel’s show after Oz the Mentalist had to cancel their appearance due to the shooting incident at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, as per CNN.
Taking part in the segment, Lovett declared to Kimmel that he was out of his mind to have suddenly embraced the ballroom proposal. He further revealed that not only had the work on Trump’s intended White House ballroom stopped but it was after a federal judge found that Trump probably did not have the power to demolish the East Wing for the purpose of the ballroom. While the Justice Department is appealing the judge’s decision, some Republican lawmakers are working on a bill that would explicitly give Trump the authority to proceed with and possibly finance the project.
Lovett pointed out that despite the recent violence, the legal problems with the ballroom remain unchanged. “The issue with the [White House] ballroom is not the idea or concept of a philosophical ballroom, ” he explained. “The ballroom doesn’t become more legal just because someone did something evil and f—ing stupid at a different ballroom. It’s not how ballrooms work.”
Jimmy Kimmel stands up for “Expectant Widow” Joke and Apologizes to First Lady
Jimmy Kimmel took to his show to respond to the escalating calls by both President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump for the host’s firing or some form of punishment by ABC. The anger against Kimmel came as a result of a satirical “alternative” White House Correspondents’ Dinner monologue that Kimmel did last week, two days before the assassination attempt at the Hilton. The most contentious remark made was calling the First Lady “an expectant widow.”
Kimmel defended the joke on Monday and said that it was “obviously a joke about their age difference” and he also described it as a “very light roast joke.” But, regarding the tragic events over the weekend, the comedian changed the topic and apologized directly to the First Lady and the President as well as to those who were present at the shooting, and he admitted that the incident must have been “traumatic” and “scary.”
The Justice Department has reported that the shooter was planning to enter the annual dinner, an event organized by the White House Correspondents’ Association, with the purpose of killing the President and the senior Cabinet members. The incident led to the Secret Service evacuating President Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and other top officials to get them out of danger after gunfire broke out just a few steps from the ballroom where the event was taking place.
White House Steps Up Pressure for Kimmel’s Dismissal After Suspected Gunman’s Arraignment
Legal and political repercussions of the Washington Hilton shooting kept on rising on Monday after the accused gunman, 31-year-old Cole Allen, was formally indicted for attempting to assassinate the President of the United States as well as being charged with two federal weapons offenses. Allen was detained by the Secret Service moments prior to the ballroom doors; although during the incident one officer was shot, President Trump stated that the bulletproof vest of the agent prevented him from serious injury.
Without the development of the case itself, the administration switched to media and has maintained a continuous campaign against late-night host Jimmy Kimmel. After Kimmel’s last night monologue, White House Communications Director Steven Cheung gave a ruthless response on Tuesday calling the comedian “a s— human being.”
Cheung’s message goes straight to the point by demanding that the comedian face professional consequences, saying that “ABC needs to fire him immediately and he should be shunned for the rest of his life.” The rising tone of the words indicate a strong clash underlining the relations between the White House and the network as the administration surfaces Kimmel’s earlier satirical “roast” jokes against the seriousness of the assassination attempt over the weekend.
