A parent or a teacher has to adopt a different approach when teaching kids how to play guitar. Many music teachers struggle to teach notes, chords, and rhythms to young kids. The tutor has to follow a ‘fun-based’ approach when teaching the young age group.
Initially, the musician must focus on making the kid come back for the next kids guitar lesson. Using fun and easy methods will boost student retention and inspire them to practice more regularly. Begin with easy tunes and fun songs that the kid enjoys the most. In the early stages, focus on having fun instead of perfecting complex tunes and music theories.
Begin With the Basics
A guitar tutor has to be patient as kids may not learn as quickly as adults. Similar to learning words to speak, give the child enough time to settle and be ready for this amazing skill. Initially, teach them about the guitar basics, for instance, correct posture, finger placement, simple tunes, short melodies, and playing techniques.
First off, teach them how to maintain a good posture while playing and the correct way to hold the guitar. Initially, they should play the guitar while sitting on a straight chair with their feet on the ground. Give them short breaks during the session as they can not stay committed to learning the instrument for a long time like adults.
Unlike cleaning or studying, it is easy to make the practice session fun. Make sure the kid has a fun learning experience to inspire them to learn more.
Help Them Get Enthusiastic About Learning Guitar
It can be quite overwhelming for the kid to learn guitar and understand its techniques. Instead of trying to get it right, give them time to get familiar with the instrument and pluck the string randomly. Letting them play the way they want will give them an in-depth understanding of the guitar.
Additionally, kids between the ages of 4 to 6 years may not be able to play notes right away. Allow unstructured play and encourage them to create their own melodies. Once they are familiar with the guitar, start teaching them basic techniques.
Work on Basic Notes and Strumming Patterns
A child can easily get bored if the tutor explains a single note for a long time. Explain briefly and comprehensively how the strings and notes are related to each other. In addition, start with the easiest down-strum pattern and work your way to the down-up strum. Also, help them understand how sound is different on the aforesaid patterns.
Start with Simple Chords
Begin with a simple chord that requires only a couple of fingers to play. Play chords that do not require the use of a pinky finger. Being the weaker finger, kids may not be able to pluck the strings cleanly which may lead to injury. Teach kids simple chords using an app or a chord guide.
Lastly, instruct them to store the guitar in the case once the practice session is over. Moreover, give them some expert tips on cleaning and maintaining the musical instrument.
