Lightfoot said, \u201cthe challenge with the beaches, and with swimming pools\u2026 is that they are rife for congregate gathering and not social distancing.\u201d Because of that, she said, \u201cwe don\u2019t see the beaches opening up anytime soon.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Given the situation in states like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/urbanmatter.com\/phoenix\/arizona-shuts-down-bars-gyms-water-parks-movie-theaters-and-public-pools-for-30-days\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arizona<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Florida, and Texas, the Mayor\u2019s decision to keep beaches and pools closed isn\u2019t a surprising one, but perhaps a little disappointing for anyone who got their hopes up when Dr. Allison Arwady, commissioner of the Chicago Department of Health, told FOX 32 in late June that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/urbanmatter.com\/chicago\/a-complete-guide-to-phase-4-chicago-openings-beaches-venues-restaurants-more\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">beaches would most likely open up after the Fourth of July holiday weekend<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The city\u2019s response has been to open up several <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicago.gov\/city\/en\/depts\/fss\/provdrs\/serv\/svcs\/dfss_cooling_centers.html\">cooling stations<\/a>, roll out mobile cooling stations, and reopen splash parks to the public.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The splash parks will be open from Tuesday to Friday, with park district employees on the watch to make sure that social distancing is enforced. Chicago\u2019s Department of Family &amp; Support Services has opened up cooling stations with new social distancing guidelines in place to ensure safety while people stay cool. In addition to the normal centers, a few centers just for senior citizens have also been opened up so as to avoid a higher risk of coronavirus transmission among that more vulnerable population.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6741\" src=\"https:\/\/urbanmatter.com\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/beach-vacations-chicago-illinois-beach-01.jpeg\" alt=\"Cheap Chicago Date Ideas\" width=\"720\" height=\"460\" srcset=\"https:\/\/urbanmatter.com\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/beach-vacations-chicago-illinois-beach-01.jpeg 720w, https:\/\/urbanmatter.com\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/beach-vacations-chicago-illinois-beach-01-600x383.jpeg 600w, https:\/\/urbanmatter.com\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/beach-vacations-chicago-illinois-beach-01-300x192.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/>Unfortunately, many Chicago residents are taking their own measures to stay cool, such as ignoring the city\u2019s warnings and going to beaches still, as well as opening up fire hydrants. City officials have been cracking down on removing residents from the beaches, especially because of the fact that there are no lifeguards on duty, and the Chicago Fire Department has warned that opening fire hydrants poses a threat when they can\u2019t be closed again, not to mention the fact that often drivers can\u2019t always see children playing in the water.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finding the shade or running fans are alternatives to the more dangerous options above and, if your local retailer has one in stock, home pools are also a smart way to get on top of the weather. The heatwave should break by the end of the weekend, but residents are advised to stay hydrated and smart about the weather in these coming days.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>At UrbanMatter, U Matter.
