Paul Simon<\/a>\u2019s debut at Ravinia last Saturday night was nothing short of spectacular. Performing to a sell-out crowd in both the pavilion and on the lawn, there was nary a blade of glass to be seen by concert goers who lined up early to claim their spots on the grass. They seemed to sense the awe and wonder of seeing one of America\u2019s most prolific musicians\u2026and a performer who brought back the soundtrack of their lives.<\/p>\n

As a duo with Art Garfunkel and a solo artist for more than 30 years, this popular songster penned some of America\u2019s most beloved songs, earning him a place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. His set list took the audience across the globe into the American South, Brazil, South Africa and Asia, creating zydeco sounds meshed with wind chimes, horns, and cowbells. His multi-talented, high-energy band of nine kept the rhythm movin\u2019 and shakin\u2019 for more than two hours (without intermission) of uplifting gospel, pop, and traditional music.<\/p>\n

Paul Simon delighted the crowd with his popular \u201cSlip Slidin\u2019 Away,\u201d \u201c50 Ways to Leave Your Lover\u201d and \u201cMe and Julio Down by the School Yard.\u201d He performed \u201cThe Werewolf\u201d and quirky \u201cWristband\u201d from his recently released 13th solo studio album, Stranger to Stranger, which he says will be his last. Though some of his songs were less familiar, they were so upbeat\u00a0and just as wonderful as his well-known hits.<\/p>\n

After the second encore, the band left the stage and then it was all Paul, with nothing but his signature black tee and guitar, crooning the soulful \u201cSounds of Silence.” Even after 40 years, it never sounded dated, just like an \u201cold friend come to call.\u201d<\/p>\n
