Some of our favorites, in fact,\u00a0contain far too many complete exaggerations of the great city of New York. But there&#8217;s a few that also hit the Big Apple right on the head.<\/p>\n<p>From intentional comedies to the dramas that make us laugh without meaning to, here&#8217;s a list of TV shows filmed in New York City that both come close and miss the target altogether on what living in the big city is actually like.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Seinfeld<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_22021\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22021\" style=\"width: 960px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-22021\" src=\"https:\/\/urbanmatter.com\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/21752149_10156173909934453_3287090386150668596_n.jpg\" alt=\"Seinfeld\" width=\"960\" height=\"720\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22021\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Photo Credit: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/seinfeld\/\">Seinfeld Facebook<\/a><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The one show on this list that seems to have almost no faults is probably also your favorite: the age-old <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seinfeld<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. There\u2019s nothing <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> New Yorkish about this endearing sitcom, from the way that most people in the Big Apple are \u201cundateable\u201d to the hoards of money you dish out on rent. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And though their dreamboat apartment <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">might<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> be a little unlikely, as far as authenticity goes, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seinfeld<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> takes the cake. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt<\/span><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_22013\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22013\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-22013\" src=\"https:\/\/urbanmatter.com\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/12328127_486997894816854_979251813_n-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22013\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Photo Credit: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/BCxriBzOduf\/?hl=en&amp;taken-by=unbreakablekimmyschmidt\">Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt Instagram<\/a><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The biggest focus of this hilarious show, especially in relation to what it\u00a0got right about living in NYC, is endless and indestructible gentrification. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We all know about it, and some of us probably end up supporting it just by moving into these trendy New York neighborhoods. Kimmy and the rest of the gang\u00a0recognize that small improvements are good for the community, but not when it forces the original community out, and the cast does its best to create awareness for this in most episodes. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Friends<\/span><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_22014\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22014\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-22014\" src=\"https:\/\/urbanmatter.com\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/18401959_10154805559099576_7846956002411453380_o-1024x538.jpg\" alt=\"Friends\" width=\"1024\" height=\"538\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22014\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Photo Credit: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/friends.tv\/photos\/rpp.22577904575\/10154805559099576\/?type=3&amp;theater\">Friends Facebook<\/a><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We know everybody loves <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Friends<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but we\u2019ve all also noticed the fake idealism emanating from this show that is, honestly speaking,<em> nothing<\/em> like living in NYC. Six best friends (some of whom live in the same, totally unrealistic apartment building) find endless amounts of time to hang out with each other despite their desperately busy lives and also throw massive parties with people we never meet?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> I mean, I <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wish<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> my twenties were like this, but damn. Ain\u2019t nobody got time for that. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How I Met Your Mother<\/span><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_22015\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22015\" style=\"width: 851px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-22015\" src=\"https:\/\/urbanmatter.com\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/10246773_10152761931367277_9014188409270766063_n.jpg\" alt=\"How I Met Your Mother\" width=\"851\" height=\"315\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22015\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Photo Credit: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/OfficialHowIMetYourMother\/photos\/a.10150706209407277.413167.7807422276\/10152761931367277\/?type=1&amp;theater\">How I Met Your Mother Facebook<\/a><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another fan-favorite, realistic depiction of New York City is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How I Met Your Mother<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a fast-paced comedy sitcom that takes you through hundreds of seemingly random stories that all lead up to Ted finally meeting his wife. Each character personifies the various people you might see wandering the city, and every episode goes into specific detail about the strange quirks NYC has to offer (like how everything is so. freaking. small).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Broad City<\/span><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_22016\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22016\" style=\"width: 946px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-22016\" src=\"https:\/\/urbanmatter.com\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/24862640_10155796651966718_4086284224678597418_n.jpg\" alt=\"Broad City\" width=\"946\" height=\"360\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22016\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Photo Credit: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pg\/BroadCity\/photos\/?ref=page_internal\">Broad City Facebook<\/a><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As far as being politically correct, this show is the ultimate winner. Riotously hilarious, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Broad City<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> follows Abbi and Ilana as they experience strange subway rides and all kinds of interesting dates. These girls spend their days working to be better people, scouring for food, drugs, and free yoga in the cheapest way they possibly can, all while working odd jobs around the city. What\u2019s more New York than that? <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sex and the City<\/span><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_22017\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22017\" style=\"width: 851px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-22017\" src=\"https:\/\/urbanmatter.com\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/10470937_10152543705811204_4298030241102076646_n.jpg\" alt=\"Sex and the City\" width=\"851\" height=\"315\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22017\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Photo Credit: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/sexandthecity\/\">Sex and the City Facebook<\/a><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m sure you already had a hunch that this one wasn\u2019t very authentic, but probably the biggest gaping hole in the show is the massive apartment Carrie somehow magically scores. It\u2019s way too nice and big (and in the Upper East Side of Manhattan for crying out loud) to be afforded by a starving journalist, even if she does get help from Mr. Big every now and then. Not to mention her entire lifestyle is far too lavish for a writer at all. Dream on, Bradshaw. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Master of None<\/span><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_22018\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22018\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-22018\" src=\"https:\/\/urbanmatter.com\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/18889084_1824500287867065_634752941797933056_n-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Master of None\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22018\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Photo Credit: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/MasterofNone\/\">Master of None Facebook<\/a><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A relatively new show, and one that is mostly unlike any other, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Master of None<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was created by Aziz Ansari, who stars in this dramatic comedy about his life experiences. However, in one particular episode, \u201cNew York, I Love You\u201d, we get a very different perspective to follow. Three oh-so-New York background characters\u2014a doorman, a cashier, and a cab driver\u2014get to share their stories, and it ends up being the most outrageous, yet entirely believable episode on the show. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gossip Girl<\/span><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_22019\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22019\" style=\"width: 850px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-22019\" src=\"https:\/\/urbanmatter.com\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/430884_10151179704907901_1776162238_n.jpg\" alt=\"Gossip Girl\" width=\"850\" height=\"315\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22019\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Photo Credit: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/GossipGirl\/\">Gossip Girl Facebook<\/a><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anyone who claims that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gossip Girl <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has a single ounce of truth in it is dead wrong. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maybe if the show had been set in college, or they had toned down the amount of alcohol and high-fashion portrayed in every scene. Perhaps if, in a perfect world, Blair Waldorf was a realistic character with an actual humane sense of morality, the show could earn some points. But no. Even your deep love for the utter perfection of Dan (another reason for the unrealism) can\u2019t give this show an ounce of credibility.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New York City is the perfect stomping ground for American comedy.
