{"id":42908,"date":"2017-09-06T13:59:55","date_gmt":"2017-09-06T18:59:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/urbanmatter.com\/new-york\/?p=18934"},"modified":"2019-04-22T11:34:10","modified_gmt":"2019-04-22T16:34:10","slug":"the-constitution-under-st-marks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/urbanmatter.com\/chicago\/the-constitution-under-st-marks\/","title":{"rendered":"Passion and Anger Fuel &#8216;The Constitution,&#8217; Playing at Under St Marks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><em>The Constitution<\/em>, currently playing at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.horsetrade.info\/under-st-marks\" target=\"_blank\">Under St Marks<\/a>, is a very intriguing stage play that explores the formation of a constitution by four passionate individuals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Written by Mickael de Oliveira, <em>The Constitution<\/em> takes place in an abandoned gym following the economic downturn of \u00a0Portugal in 2009. A group of artists are hired by the government to discuss a \u201cnew\u201d constitution for the country. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">After viewing this performance, we did a bit of research, having left with curiosity on Portugal&#8217;s history. The Portuguese constitution was created in 1976 after the Carnation Revolution of 1975, on which this play has been loosely based.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The play is directed by Jill DeArmon, and stars Maria Leite, Filipe Valle Costa, Diogo Martins and Pedro Carmo. The work from these four actors brings a fascinating and thought-provoking concept to life. Passion, love, underlying resentment, and plenty of anger are the undercurrents that run through this\u00a0play.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The standout performance was that of Maria Leite. She is so fiery in her presentation of the character, you can almost feel the anger running through her veins. It&#8217;s captivating.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">If you&#8217;re in the mood for a short piece of engaging theatre, we would definitely recommend this performance. It is only running for a very short time at\u00a0<\/span>Under St Marks, which is a great little theater in the East Village.
