The Chicago Jazz Festival started in 1974, shortly after the death of Duke Ellington, a talented composer and bandleader. It was organized by some Chicago musicians who wanted to honor and celebrate their late colleague and bandleader. This attracted thousands of music lovers to the venue, Grant Park, and it was later turned into an annual event.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 1978, another memorial concert was held in the same venue, in honor of John Coltrane<\/a>. The following year, 1979, the Jazz Institute of Chicago started planning for another special concert to be held in the same venue as the other two. Unfortunately, the three concerts that were scheduled to take place in August might be clashing.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"To help manage the three concerts scheduled for the end of August, the Mayor’s Office of Special Events brought the suggestion of merging them. With this, the Labor Day weekend Chicago Jazz Festival was born.
